The original Nate the Great, by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat (1972) was the first detective story I ever loved. The writing was like nothing I'd encountered before (I now recognise it as a hilariously "noir" style common in adult detective stories), and the characters, like Nate himself and the wonderfully enigmatic Rosamond (whom I adored) kept my interest at all times. And Marc Simont's illustrations (later taken over by Martha Weston and Jody Wheeler) were SO PERFECT! With 29 Nate books in print, all the way up to 2019, this is a series worth introducing to your kids!
