One of Skywest's Embraer E175s in Delta Connection colors decelerates after touchdown on 16R at SeaTac. This aircraft, N290SY, was delivered to Skywest in October 2018. ⠀ ⠀ The E175 is slightly longer than the baseline E170 that entered service first in 2004. The E170 seats about 72 passengers in single class configuration and is 29.9m/98ft long while the E175 pictured here seats about 78 in single class configuration and is 31.7m/104ft long.⠀ ⠀ The E170 is no longer in production- it has been replaced by the E175SC (Special Configuration). An E175SC is just an E175 that is fitted with 70 seats to comply with US scope clauses- the added space is then devoted to the premium cabin while giving operators the flexibility to convert the aircraft to E175 later on should the need arise (which would really just be a cabin reconfiguration). One of Endeavor Air’s 43 Bombardier CRJ200s, N8837B, heads out at dusk at Atlanta. ⁣ ⁣ When Bombardier launched the CRJ program in 1989 after its 1987 purchase of Canadair, it was based heavily on prior studies done in the late 1970s. In the 1979, Canadair had the Challenger 600, the initial production variant of the business jet, in the midst of its flight test program and began work on the Challenger E (for extended) which was launched in 1980 with deliveries expected in 1983.⁣ ⁣ The main competitor to the Challenger E would have been the Gulfstream GIII. The Challenger E replaced the Lycoming ALF502 engines of the Challenger 600 with the General Electric CF34, the civilian version of the TF34 turbofan used on the A-10 Warthog and S-3 Viking. But more significantly than a change to a new power plant, the Challenger E had a 105-inch stretch of the fuselage.⁣ ⁣ By 1980, the Challenger 600 was selling slowly and Canadair adopted the CF34 engines from the Challenger E program to the next variant of the business jet, the Challenger 601. The change in engines as well as addition of winglets was a hit with customers and sales improved. However, as work on the Challenger E proceeded, even with the adoption of the improvements of the 601 like the winglets, the early CF34 engines were turning out to be insufficient for the bigger Challenger E. ⁣ ⁣ In 1981, Canadair cancelled the Challenger E program with work done folded back into further improvements in the Challenger 601 business jet. ⁣ ⁣ By 1986, the improvements in Challenger business jet led Canadair to reopen studies into a stretched variant, only this time instead of a business jet, it would be a regional jet with a more ambitious stretch of 165 inches with the winglets and aerodynamic improvements of the later Challenger business jet variants. Sunset touchdown at DFW by a Delta Connection CRJ900 operated by Endeavor Air…. Endeavor Air began in 1985 as Express Airlines I at Minneapolis-St Paul with its first codeshare in May of that year with Republic Airlines as Republic Express. Within the first year, Express I was flying 20 Jetstream 31s and 7 Saab 340s to 32 destinations out of MSP. When Northwest acquired Republic in October 1986, Express I flew under the Northwest Airlink banner. In 1997, Northwest acquired Express and consolidated its operations at Memphis as the Northwest launch operator of the CRJ100. In 2002, Express I changed its name to Pinnacle Airlines which in turn acquired two other regionals, Colgan Air and Mesaba Airlines. In 2007, despite being owned by Northwest, Pinnacle secured agreements to fly for Delta as Delta Connection with the delivery of the CRJ900s to the airline. Like its larger and more well-known stablemate, the General Electric CF6 turbofan, the smaller CF34 engine that powers this Republic/Delta Connection Embraer E170 is every bit as significant in the annals of aviation powerplant history. The CF34 has its roots as the military TF34 engine that was developed in the late 1960s for the US Navy’s VSX competition that resulted in the Lockheed S-3 Viking patrol jet. With a core based upon the T64 turboshaft engine, the TF34 was designed for fuel efficiency given the long patrol missions expected from the S-3 Viking. The TF34 made its first flight the same year as the CF6 went into production for the Douglas DC-10. The TF34 was then selected to power the Fairchild Republic A-10 “Warthog" in 1973. The transition to the civilian world began when Canadair began work on the CL600 Challenger business jet- originally intended to use the Lycoming ALF502 (which powered the A-10’s competitor, the Northrop A-9 as well as the BAe-146), GE offered a developed version of the TF34 called the CF34. While common in large commercial airframes to offer engine options, the Canadair Challenger became the first business jet to offer customers a choice between the CF34 and ALF502. Originally criticized as being too overpowered for the first production Challenger, the CF34 offered growth potential that was a significant factor in the development of stretched Challenger derivatives that would become the CRJ series regional jets. The first production CF34 flew in 1983 on the Challenger.
