TONY MONTANA W JIMIN STFU
A kind of postscript to my earlier Beatles post, this is take #2 of Hey Jude, recorded July 29, 1968. In this extremely pared down version, Paul’s beautiful piano and vocal work are simply sublime. McCartney wrote the song while he was driving to visit and comfort Cynthia Lennon, from whom John Lennon had recently separated, and Julian Lennon, John’s young son. Though Paul has always stated that the song was written to Julian, it’s hard not to think that, on some level, he was writing it to John, as well. One of the greatest composing and performing teams of the 20th century was nearing the end of an era.
The Marmalade perform Paul McCartney’s Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, live on the final day of The Sixties, 12/31/1969. Blasphemic? Perhaps. But it’s quite good, and the band have considerable fun in their performance. The Scots, featuring Dean Ford on lead vocals and Paul look-alike Junior Campbell on keyboards, registered a #1 UK hit with their version, so take THAT.
I am a sucker for this Beatles version, which appeared on the third Anthology. Paul varies the vocal quite a bit, and just nails it. On the third verse, when all join in, it’s heaven on earth, if you’re me. This is audio only, I’m afraid, but please be consoled by the fact that this is take #5, and by John Lennon’s wild antics in the background at beginning and end.
