Silver Light
Okay, so I lost a bet with @the-ultimate-french-fry and the price was that I had to write a ficlet. You remember how I asked you to pick 1 or 2? Well, that was omit because I loved both ideas lmao. The ending is a little shaky cause I can’t end anything properly lmao enjoy it
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The night was young. The stars twinkled in the deep void of the night while the moon casted her silverlight upon the perfect world. Dark grey clouds would lazily roam the vast open sky that sat above the world that Dr. Monty created in his corner of the universe.
Now, the crew arrived to the house not too long ago. The day before, they all recall, and they are enjoying their time relaxing and wondering what would happen to them now that their mission was essentially completed.
That night, however, was one that Dr. Edward Richtofen has deemed perfect. Perfect enough to walk through the fields with his beloved. He wants to spend time with Tank Dempsey, lest something happens.
So, he plans to do just that.
“Dempsey dearest, would you like to take a walk with me this beautiful night?” Richtofen asks the marine after dinner.
Dempsey smiles at the cute nickname and his cheeks dust a shade of pink, “Of course, Richtofen. Why would I say no?”
Richtofen smiles is own loving smile and, offering his arm to the American, leads him out into the cool, crisp night. The breeze nipped at their exposed skin, the bright moon providing light to see the sleeping countryside.
Richtofen and Dempsey walk side by side along the grassy plains, listening to the cricket’s song and the rustling of the trees. They walked for a while when they spot a small pond not too far from the house, stopping to gaze upon the water and watch the fireflies buzz about. The silence only broken at Dempsey’s sigh.
“This was really nice, Richtofen. I’m glad to have finally spent some time with you without Tak or Nik around. Or any freakbags.” The American’s baritone voice cut through Richtofen’s thoughts and sent chills down his spine.
“Of course, my dear. But I think we should take advantage of the time we have now,” Richtofen’s hand gripped Dempsey’s gently as his other arm snaked around his waist, pulling him closer. “The night is still young and we do not know what will happen now that we are at the house. So, dance with me?”
Dempsey smiles up at Edward and places his free hand on his shoulder in silent agreement.
So, that’s what they did. Richtofen lead Dempsey through a slow dance through the grass, listening to the music that only they can hear in their hearts. Richtofen spun Dempsey around, causing the shorter male to chuckle and look up at the German with love filled baby blue eyes, and dips him downward. Richtofen’s own forest green reflecting his own emotions towards the man in his arms. His thoughts declare how much he loves this person and asks himself what Dempsey sees in him to love him back.
He pulls Dempsey from the dip and they continue with the slow dance. His thoughts travel to their journey; how they met as enemies back in France, they reunited once more back at the factory, what Richtofen forced Dempsey to go through at the castle, how Dempsey’s personality changed on the island and in Stalingrad. Richtofen’s mind weighed heavy at how he had hurt him. How can Dempsey love someone who forced him to kill his other self and to be the reason why he had changed in the first place?
Richtofen slowed to a stop, looking down at the space between them and avoiding Dempsey’s confused gaze.
“Richtofen? Is everything alright?” Dempsey voiced his concern when Richtofen’s grip loosened on both his hand and waist.
“How can you love someone like me? How can you find love in someone that doesn’t deserve it?” Richtofen asks suddenly, their clasped hands dropping at their sides.
“What do you mean, Edward?” Dempsey is visibly confused and worried. Is Richtofen having one of his depressive episodes again?
“What I mean is, how can you love me, Dempsey? When all I have done is put you through emotional trauma on this whole journey, forced you to kill your other self without even having the chance to say goodbye, to cause you to rethink your whole life,” Silent tears fell down his cheeks. “When I’m the cause of all your pain!”
To say that Dempsey is shocked is an understatement. He does realise all those things that Edward mentioned, but he is also the person that helped him find his purpose in the universes, that he is something more than just a marine or a loud mouth that follows any order. And he needs Richtofen to know that before he beats himself up further for it.
“Eddie, look at me,” Tank’s hands has a gentle grip on Edward’s cheeks and makes him look him in the eye. “I love you, okay? And, yes, I admit that this journey has done a number on my subconscious, but you have made me realize much more than that.
You made me realize that I do have a purpose in this universe, that I'm not just a loudmouth marine. More than just someone who follows orders. And I realized that death can happen to any of us. That we are on death’s doorstep,” he wipes the tears from Edward's face. “So don't beat yourself up over it. I love you for you. Nevermind what happened on this journey.”
“But how can I ask for your forgiveness?” Edward's tear filled eyes looked back into Dempsey’s comforting ones.
Dempsey smiles, “You can start by actually asking for it.”
Dempsey pulls Richtofen's face down for a kiss, stretching as tall as he could on his tiptoes to even reach his tall German boyfriend. Richtofen instantly reciprocates, wrapping his arms around the American and pulling him all the closer.
Because of this interaction, Richtofen is all the more sure of the decision he has had on his mind for a while, something that he thought of at their stay at the island and was planned out at Stalingrad. This was just the little push over the edge that he needed.
They pull away from the kiss.
“My dearest Dempsey, I can't begin to say how grateful I am to have you in my life and that you were to forgive me,” Richtofen starts, fishing for something in his pant pocket. “We once met as enemies at the excavation site then we grew to have a friendship that I adored. Then we became what we are today, together.” Richtofen holds up a clasped fist in between himself and his love.
Dempsey looks at him with a confused expression, but smiling all the same, “What are you trying to say, Richtofen?”
“What I'm trying to say is, I love you, Thomas “Tank" Dempsey. With all of my heart and all of my being. You are the light of my life and you became a reason that I still fight. And I still want that fight,” he took one of Dempsey's hands and gave him the object in his grasp, closing his fingers over it and holding his fist. “I hope that you would allow me to fight for you for the rest of time or whatever will happen. That I will protect you from dangers to come and that I will remain by your side for however long you want me around.”
Richtofen dropped his hands. Dempsey looked at his enclosed hand and opened his fingers. Shock ran through his body, leaving his body stiff as a board, mouth completely dry, and his mind blank of any thoughts. In his palm, is a scuffed up golden wedding band. The ring is missing some polish in a few places and it looks like it was crushed my some weight, leaving little dents on the finish.
Dempsey looks up at the German with wide eyes.
“Edward, I…” he couldn’t find the words.
“I know that this was out of the blue and should have been asked at a better time, but I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Dempsey. I want to be there for you forever. I love you so much. So, Thomas “Tank” Dempsey, will you do me the honor of marrying me?”
Richtofen finally asked the question. Oh, he was so nervous and afraid of Dempsey’s answer. His stomach was doing backflips and his hands were shaking. He stared back into Dempsey’s tear filled baby blue eyes, waiting for him patiently to find his answer.
“Yes!”
Dempsey jumped onto the German with his whole body weight, gripping on him tightly and letting his tears fall.
“Yes! A million times yes!” He had the biggest grin on his face.
Richtofen recovered from the sudden attack and returned the hug, grinning like an idiot. Dempsey broke the hug and reached up to the back of his neck. He pulled his dog tags off his neck, unclasping the chain. He then looped the ring through the chain and clasped it once more, showing Edward.
“Now, we will be closer than ever.” He giggled as Richtofen scooped him up again and planted many kisses on his face.
The moon was certainly bright, bright enough to light the countryside. The silver light was even brighter glinting off the silver dog tags and golden band.
Sorry, this summer I just start work 😂😂😂😂😂😂😭
