It's silly, Wei Ying thinks as he flutters his eyes, trying very hard to not open them to confirm what he has been speculating since a few weeks. It doesn't happen very often, but it's not even that rare that he would fail to notice. He wishes Lan Zhan would just talk to him. Wei Ying wishes Lan Zhan would tell him what bothers him so much as to lie awake at night, his grip on Wei Wuxian's waist tighter than when they had fallen asleep- at least when Wei Ying had fallen asleep.
Lan Zhan doesn't sleep a wink on a few nights.
Wei Ying knows because he has the habit of waking up at odd hours during the time the earth finishes half of its rotation around it's axis. He knows because sometimes he can hear soft cries from the man he is sleeping against. He knows because Lan Zhan holds him like Wei Ying is his life force, and without him Lan Zhan would never breathe again.
Lan Zhan holds him like he had not taken a single breath in the past thirteen years.
Wei Ying understands all of this, his heart aches and his voice threatens to break out in a sob should he decided to speak.
What he doesn't understand is why Lan Zhan doesn't confide in him, why Lan Zhan doesn't let Wei Ying drive away his demons.
It's silly, he thinks, not because Lan Zhan's fear is unfound. It's silly because Wei Ying is right here- right next to his Lan Zhan, his favorite person in whole wide world- and it's disconcerting that Lan Zhan would rather pretend that he is fine instead of asking Wei Ying for help.

Lan Zhan has always known the amount of knowledge Wei Ying possesses is unlike anybody else's. Wei Ying, as a young man, had the gall to question Lan Zhan's Uncle when none had ever dared before. Wei Ying had the presence of mind and the skill to fight the Xuanwu when they were but inexperienced cultivators. Wei Ying had the capacity to fight against the order of nature and come out of the Burial Mounds alive. Wei Ying is a prodigy, one of a kind.
Wei Ying doesn't believe in himself, anymore.
Wei Ying is scared, Lan Zhan realises one day as they exit Lan Qiren's office. There had been call for help from the local villagers against demons that have been attacking at nights. Such occurrences have been happening a lot lately.
His husband had made excellent points. He had suggested the use of talismans to ward of the spirits, followed by a "of course, you don't have to listen to me, you already know what to do haha." Wei Ying had suggested stricter patrolling from not only junior disciples, but maybe a few of the seniors one as well, followed by a hollow laugh.
Wei Ying is always doing this, sharing his knowledge and then quickly dismissing his own contributions as if they were uncalled for. Wei Ying is scared of his own words.
Lan Zhan doesn't like this, he needs his Wei Ying to know that people trust his expertise. That the juniors look up to him. Lan Zhan sees it in their son's eyes as Sizhui looks at Wei Ying like the man is sharing the knowledge of achieving immortality. Lan Zhan sees it in the mischievous glee of Jingyi's smile when Wei Ying says something ridiculously silly yet his words full of wisdom.
These are also followed by a self deprecating laugh.
He wishes Wei Ying would trust his his own words like others in his life so easily do.
Lan Zhan knows where it comes from, this distrust Wei Ying has in his own words. Too many promises that Wei Ying had failed to keep.
