Portrait of scared girl • • In Bathanaha not far from the Nepal border in the state of Bihar, India I photographed this young woman. Her nose had been badly broken which was obvious due to the large scar. She is from the Banwariya tribe. They make a living from begging and both making and selling plastic flowers on the street. The girls are also extremely vulnerable to being sold into prostitution. Intergenerational prostitution is widespread in these parts. This girl clearly lives in fear of the many men in this area. In Mumbai while photographing the Uchliya tribe under a roadway overpass I was struck by the calm beauty of this baby sleeping in a hammock. No concept of what is going on around. Simply born to this situation. This baby could have been born to a wealthy person or a middle class person but it was born to a de-notified tribe. This young girl from the De-notified tribes moved me in an emotional way i was not prepared for. Physically she reminded me of my young cousin who was born in Los Angeles. The child of two doctors and the granddaughter of an Emmy award winning television writer. My cousin through no fault of her own had won what I call #thebirthlotery She will be taken care of emotionally, physically and financially. I can’t imagine what would have to happen to her to lose that security. While this girl in India was born into a life of extreme poverty, malnutrition and very limited opportunities. She is a prime target for being sold into prostitution and trafficked.
