the pregnant woman scene is actually quit a goof touch in the movie, for realise that you need to re-wacth the first alien movie, when the first alien kill a woman by well impaling her btw her legs….the aliens have always been made for be the literal representation of rape, so that scene didn’t shock me that much. also if you wanna watch requiem properly you watch only the 28 min of screen time of the predator in the movie, its a the best part ;)
I know that Alien is a literal representation of rape. Like, that’s pretty obvious and well known.
The "shock” factor is the people that they choose to attack, how they choose to attack them, the lingering on it. There’s a difference in tone and approach that makes it so that the people you are watching get killed are there specifically for the purpose of getting killed, and they’re also *specifically* the type of people who literally cannot fight back even to the extent of the protagonists who are meant to be ‘normal’ folk. You didn’t know this woman before this scene or after this scene, it had no effect on anything. And the worst part of it being that there’s nothing to glean from that scene other than a stupid stupid stupid “lol dudes wouldn’t it be fucked up if--” moment. It’s a one-off. The monster doesn’t do this anywhere else.
The *entire point of this scene* is to watch a pregnant woman have a horrible thing happen to her, and I don’t care if it is supposed to be “goofy”, it just underlines the movie as misanthropic edgelord shit to me.
It’s entirely voyeuristic and mean and unnecessary in a way that most good horror gore flicks at least mostly sidestep. And it didn’t even SHOCK me in the sense of ‘oh my god i can’t believe they did that’--I watch a TON of horror movies, I watch B action movies, you don’t have to tell me what the other alien movies were like or say I should rewatch them because *i’ve watched them all so many times*. This is basically my genre/brand. My shock was more like “Are you fucking kidding me right now?” because there’s a big difference between GOOD horror violence and BAD horror violence, and I could basically see what was coming and was hoping they wouldn’t DO IT because then it proved everything I thought about this dumb movie.
Even outside of that one pregnancy scene, I think that it was terribly shot and lit, the editing is constantly interrupting itself and makes it impossible to care about any of the characters (who are all assholes anyway), the Predator was underutilized and when he was used his motivations/actions were contradictory to the established logic of the character, and a ton of his scenes were mostly parroting stuff from the First movie almost as an attempt to legitimize the character.
The only thing I thought was funny in that entire movie, that i laughed out loud at, was the guy getting like...clotheslined or something by the invisible Predator in the gun store. Otherwise, thoroughly ugly and unpleasant.
Anyway, I knew exactly what they were trying to do, I could see it. You can enjoy the film all you want, and I’m glad you can get something out of it, that’s cool, but I’d appreciate it if my movie knowledge wasn’t put into question just because I personally virulently think this film is a pile of shit.
