I finished this quilt just in time for the recipient’s birthday!
Apologies for like wind and shadows and *~physics~* but I ran so close to the deadline that I couldn’t wait to photograph until better conditions arose.
The recipient’s publicly professed favorite colors are “pink, purple, yellow, and rainbow” and I think I have been true to that vision. I also had a color reference in a needle-punch project from my sister that managed to blend these colors well.
Fabrics were mostly deep pulls from stash, with only a few (like the backing and the binding) purchased specifically for this project. As an example, the center circles are a Denyse Schmidt print circa 2009…and that’s not the oldest fabric I included. The backing is several yards of Mod Corsage by Anna Maria Horner, and the binding is Little Fluffy Clouds in Dragonfruit from Daydreamer by Tula Pink.
Many of the fabrics have been used in other quilts I’ve made. I’m a little superstitious about this. I like to think that reusing fabrics in this way makes my quilts related to each other and binds the community of people I love closer together. Or something like that, anyway. The most precious fabrics in this quilt were also used in a quilt I made for my maternal grandmother before she passed away.
This quilt is made from the pattern Vintage Spin by Kathy Doughty in her book Adding Layers: Color, Design & Imagination. It is the second time I have made this pattern, and this go-round I made an adjustment to how the center circles are attached. Search online for the free Purl Soho tutorial “Mini Quilt of the Month, February: Liberty of London Tana Lawn Circular Applique” to learn more about that process.
I would be happy to answer any questions I can about the process of making this quilt. It was truly a labor of love.
Happy birthday to my firstborn, and happy matrescence day to me. 🩷💜💛

Look who's back from the long-armer... by Carmen Via Flickr: Unfortunately, I have a bit of work to do this weekend, but I did manage to pick up my Liberty Single Girl quilt from Tammy, the long-armer today! Dylan is away too, so we might have to wait until next weekend before we can take some pics. I snapped this photo, but I'm going to wait until all my work is done before I start opening it up and admiring it. I can tell you I love it, though:D Back with more soon!
Quilty photo shoot on Main Street by Carmen Via Flickr: It was so sunny and pleasant out yesterday that Dylan offered to haul some of the ol' quilts out for a photo shoot. (Thank you as always, Dylan!) There's an old train station and adjacent barn building that had been neglected for years, but they've renovated the barn in recent months, and it seems like it's a public community space now. I guess I should have taken some actual photos of it! Anyway, here are a few long-delayed shots of the thrift blocks quilt I finished a few months back! I decided on the border after seeing something similar in a Kaffe Fassett book. You might notice that the border is made up of scraps as well as triangles of an olive/multi-coloured print: that's the Marie Jacobi Berlin metro print that I love oh so much. There are, like, 15+ colours in the print! Plus it's just full of character, and it's nice to see a map print that isn't about Paris;) I ordered a ton of it -- basically all that was left -- from Superbuzzy last year, knowing all along that I wanted to back the quilt with it. I also spent a long time thinking about the binding, but ultimately I went with Joel Dewberry's Aviary woodgrain, which was gifted to me by my friend Paul last year. Paul had gifted one FQ of the brown print to me (it was an FQ bundle), so I thought I just needed one additional FQ to get the job done. Of course, that additional FQ still had me coming up short, because I never measure when I should:P So a little bit of the border is in the yellow woodgrain. I think brown would have been better, but I felt like I had to teach myself a lesson for not buying the right amount:P Anyway, thank you again for carrying my quilts around, Dylan. Maybe someday I'll be able to let some go and sell them off!
Goodbye, 2014! by Carmen Via Flickr: I've spent this last day of 2014 sewing, baking, and reflecting on how lucky I really am. And I wanted to get one major item crossed off my to-do list: taking and posting photos of my Liberty Single Girl quilt! I just finished the binding on the 27th, I believe, and we've been out seeing friends or the skies have been too cloudy to take pics. So we moved some furniture around today and set the camera timer in order to take that very elaborate (;)) full-quilt shot...but I'll be honest, my favourite views of this quilt are of the details -- so I've thrown in a bunch of close-ups for fun! Hope 2014 ends on a joyous note for everyone, and that 2015 brings another year of inspiration and giving. Cheers, friends!:D PS: I mentioned this elsewhere, but this was quilted by Tammy at Colour Me Quilted.
I've been missing a month or so...
I’ve been missing a month or so…
December is a busy month for most people I hear. Nothing new there. For us it was extremely busy and challenging financially. Our businesses is having a downturn and we’ve had to lay off a staff member and cut the hours for the other, however, the workload is just the same, if not busier. This has meant we’ve had to put in 7 days a week, juggling the finances, running two farms, three kids on…

Blue, Green & Lemon Baby/Lap Quilt
Blue, Green & Lemon Baby/Lap Quilt
I finished this quilt last night. This quilt can either be for a baby or an adult as a lap quilt, or just hang nicely over a chair. The colours used are mostly low volume prints, mixed in with a few stronger colours for contrast. I have used fabrics from some of my all time favourite designers such as Amy Butler, Urban Chics, Lotta Jansdotter, Michael Miller, Heather Bailey and Sandra…
