New Deal: programs and legislation enacted by Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression to promote economic recovery and social reform.
Dorothea Lange: famous photographer for taking pictures of the Great Depression.
Welfare State: government that assumes responsibility for providing for the welfare of the poor, elderly, sick, and unemployed.

Bootlegger: one who sells illegal alcohol
Installment Buying: method of purchase in which buyer makes a small down payment and then pays off the rest of the debt in regular monthly payments.
Buying on Margin: systems of buying stocks in which a buyer pays a small percentage pf the purchase price while the broker advances the rest.
Eighteenth Amendment: constitutional amendment banning the manufacture, distribution, and sale of alcohol in the United States.
Volstead Act: law enacted by Congress to enforce the Eighteenth Amendment.
Marcus Garvey: founder of Universal Negro Improvement Association, who organized a Back to Africa movement which wanted blacks to go back to Africa.
Kellogg-Briand Pact: 1928 agreement in which many nations agreed to outlaw war.
Harlem Renaissance: period during the 1920's in which African American novelists, poets, and artists celebrated their culture.
Scopes Trial: 1925 trial of a Tennessee schoolteacher for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution.
Great Depression terms
Speculation: practice of making high-risk investments in hopes of obtaining large profits.
Okies: general term used to describe Dust Bowl refugees.
Hooverville: term used to describe makeshift shantytowns set up by homeless people during the Great Depression.
Dust Bowl: term used for the central and southern Great Plains during the 1930's when the region suffered from a drought and dust storms.
Black Tuesday: October 29, 1929, when stock prices fell sharply in the Great Crash.
Bonus Army: group of World War I veterans who matched on Washington, D.C., in 1932 to demand early payment of a bonus promised them by Congress.
Great Depression: period lasting from 1929 to 1941 on whish the I.S. economy faltered and unemployment soared.
