Was a guest skater this weekend for the Belfast City Rockets as they played against the Voodoo Roller Dollies in Glasgow. Was the closest game I've played in so far (and the most injury-laden! Healing vibes to both VRD skaters and BCR needles) with the final score 166 - 155 in favour of the dollies. Really looking forward to my own teams game in August now that I've got the bout bug!
Year 2 of derby is shaping up nicely - played my first bout as a member of the Maidens and been able to go outdoor skating now that it's Spring again in Ireland haha PS. ADVICE NEEDED FOR HELPING TO STOP BLISTERING - I keep getting painful blisters under the balls of both my feet, reckon it's my inside edges pushing most.
I have to do a field research paper that's due by the 21st, and my topic is describing and analyzing a space that a certain community occupies. It has to be a community that I genuinely don't know much about, and that there are certain stereotypes.
If any of you could contribute and send me your answers to my questions, I would be so so so thankful. Also if could pass the questions along, I'd probably cry with happiness to be honest.
I'll put all the questions under the Read More, and don't feel like you have to answer all of them, any help is appreciated.
1. Would I be able to visit the space you occupy?
2. Is the only space you gather together as a "community" on the track during practice and games?
3. Do you always occupy the same space?
4. Is there any sort of "initiation" to become a part of this society?
5. Can you give a general description of the "space", especially during games and practices. Also any other spaces you may occupy.
6.Are there any stereotypes about roller derby that you'd are or aren't true?
7. Is "Whip It" a good example to non-derby folk of what it's like?
If you have any other information you think would fit well into the general idea of the paper, or if there are certain you just think I should know in order to become more familiar with your community, feel free to share them with me.
You can contact me through Tumblr (fan mail would probably work best), or you can email me at [email protected]
Your boy is skater of the month for Penn-Jersey Roller Derby for the month of July, I just found out! Go check out my interview and kinda-laugh at how dumb I am!
