I get your feeling about Lion King. The original is still in my top 5 all time favourites. I vividly remember it being the first film I saw in cinemas, and burning through 2 VHS copies of it... but doesn't it feel a little sad that for an entire generation, this will be the Lion King. Not the endearing masterpiece that was the original cartoon, but this remake with good voice acting, but frankly lackluster emotion from CG animals?
I honestly don’t think this movie was made for kids. I really don’t. And I don’t see kids loving this remake more than the animated one in the years to follow.
At the movies today, there were literally only two kids with their parents in the whole theater. The rest of the audience was around me and my friends’ age, aka probably the people who grew up with the original.
I don’t believe this movie was made for kids today, but rather for us grown-ups who have a connection to the old movie. It’s all about nostalgia, it really is. And it worked. We loved it. We all laughed at the adult humor provided by Timon and Pumba, sobbed loudly over Mufasa. It worked.
