Sub-Saharan Africa 116 years ago today: Pacification of Northern Nigeria (05 Feb 1903) https://buff.ly/2RCSEBu The 1899 Anglo-French agreement assigned Northern Nigeria to the British, even though the region was almost entirely dominated by independent African states. Although the British managed to persuade many of these states to accept protection, some, including the great Sokoto Caliphate, resisted. NEW MAP: Sub-Saharan Africa 1903: Somaliland Campaign (25 Oct 1903) https://omniatlas.com/maps/safrica/19031025/ In the late 19th century Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, nicknamed the “Mad Mullah” by the British, gained power in the Somali interior. Leading his Dervishes in a long struggle against foreign expansion in the Horn of Africa, Hassan met his first major defeat in 1903-1904, when British and Ethiopian forces chased him into Italian Somalia.
