“Aww hell,” Steve grumbles from his hospital bed when he sees Bucky.
Tony on the other hand seems pretty happy to see him.
“Hey! Buckaroo’s here!”
He’s already heading for the door, ready to make a quick escape.
“Cap, your Bucky Bear is here, so maybe try to dial back the murder kitten thing you’ve got going on?”
He’s out the door, so the cup Steve throws misses him completely.
Sitting on the bed with his feet dangling over the side is the love of Bucky’s life, only about a hundred pounds lighter and several inches shorter than the last time Bucky saw him.

There's no SSR anymore. It's SHIELD, now. The worst part is, it's named after him in some way, Peggy's idea of a memorial to honor his sacrifice. He hates the thought of it, because it makes him feel like a hypocrite. His shield was only ever a prop, not something to base an agency around.
But he's been mythologized differently. They give him files to read on this thing that Peggy and Howard built, and his story is a part of it—or anyway, the story that Peggy and Howard chose to tell about him.
It shouldn't matter; they thought he was dead. They never thought he would see what they turned him into.

In which Steve and Bucky never met, and Steve was always a USO performer instead of an actual supersoldier. The serum keeps Steve alive in the ice, but he wakes up the size he used to be in the 1930s, albeit healthier. Hydra sends the Soldier to kill Captain America, but somehow the Soldier can't make himself do it.
Suddenly Steve is stuck with an assassin who can't quite kill him but refuses to leave him alone and the knowledge that Hydra is still out there somewhere.
If you can't beat them, subvert them.

Really great canon divergent fic, I really enjoyed it! 😃
When You’re Like This (Steve/Tony)
"Honey, I love you, you know I do, and I think you're gorgeous and incredible and perfect every day, but when you're like this -"
"I get it," Steve growled, crossing his bony arms over his thin chest. "You still love me, but you're not attracted to me like this. It's fine Tony. I wouldn't be either. You don't have to make excuses. I'll stay away until the magic wears off."
Steve turned to go, but Tony slammed his hand against the wall, mere inches from Steve's head, halting his path. Tony leaned in until he loomed over Steve, caged between his arms. The arc reactor, freshly returned to his chest, ached, but he ignored it, focused entirely on the suddenly smaller man trapped by his body. "Oh no, sweetheart. That's not it at all." His voice rumbled, low in his chest. Something new, vibrant and needy was curling to life inside him. Tony's fingers itched to move, to grab. He pressed closer. He growled. "You, like this… makes me want to take."
"Oh god." Steve's eyes blew black, and he swallowed heavily. He went limp under Tony's weight with his next breath. His eyes flashed up at Tony, filled with a flavour of challenge he'd never seen before. "Alright…" Steve breathed. "Take me."

After assembling their own Infinity Gauntlet, the Avengers defeated Thanos and brought back everyone who disappeared. But their victory came at a great cost: in order to take the Soul Stone, Steve had to sacrifice the Captain America mantle and all the super-soldier strength that came with it.
Small and sickly again, Steve’s poor health soon reaches a breaking point and his last option is a difficult surgery only Shuri and her team can perform.
But not all hurts can be fixed with medicine, and the real healing begins after the operation -- when Bucky asks Steve to stay in Wakanda with him.

The beginnings of a plan took shape in Steve’s mind, as clear and simple as a tactical frontal assault. He’d prove to Bucky that this was it, he was staying: Steve was retired from the fighting game, Steve wasn’t going to let anything keep pulling them apart. Maybe then when Steve finally told him he loved him, Bucky would believe him.
All things considered, Steve thought he’d handled the whole Thanos killing half the universe thing and the ensuing bitter, desperate quest to defeat him pretty well. Sacrificing his super soldier serum to use one of the Infinity Stones wasn't a problem either, not when it meant getting back the half of the universe they'd lost, and especially not when it meant getting Bucky back. But retirement and finally confessing his feelings for Bucky? Those were proving to be more challenging.

I really loved reading this story, it was wonderful!!

"I'm Grant," the guy said shyly. He had jet black hair with streaks of bright blue that brought out his eyes, even from behind his thick rimmed glasses. "I'm Captain America's assistant."
"Am I supposed to be meeting Captain America today? Because I am not prepared for that," Bucky said. He tried to play it off as a joke, but seriously, he would have found something nicer to wear if he'd known he was going to meet a national icon.
"Uh, it's only me," Grant said, biting his lip a little, just enough to show off the bright gold of his lip ring, and Bucky kinda wanted to help out with the whole biting thing, because Grant's lips were lush and pink and very biteable looking.
I really loved the characterization of Steve and Bucky here! They were really sweet <3 the canon divergence is interesting too!
could you rec more deserum Steve?!
yes! :D

Steve getting hit with some sparkly purple sh*t during a battle and left with all of his old ailments gives Bucky the opportunity to do something he's been meaning to do for ages.
an act of easy mercy by magdaliny (complete |15,375 | E)
By the time Bucky rounds the doorway into Steve's hospital room and sees Sam, flipping through a medical file with a thunderstruck expression, he's prepared himself for just about anything to greet him on the other side of that curtain.
What he's not prepared for is Steve saying, “Hey, Buck,” kind of sheepishly, and pushing all five-foot-four inches of himself a bit further up the bed.

Ex-soldier Bucky Barnes doesn't have time to think about that skinny blonde guy he met in the hospital. Especially not after the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. shows up on his doorstep and asks him to save the world.
Breathless by thelittlestpurplecat (complete |24,847 | E)
Steve's Serum is failing. He's suffering again from asthma, colorblindness, dizziness and heart trouble, problems he thought he'd left behind in the 40's. Tony and Bruce can see the problem, but not how to fix it, and Bucky is determined through all of this to do what's best for Steve, even if he's not always sure what that is.
