IDEAL CITIES: Fernand Pouillon - an amazing French architect/builder who needs to be better known in the English speaking world. In postwar France (particularly Marseilles), and also Algeria, he built low and medium income housing out of real stone in a style that was modern yet steeped in tradition. Of course he was a protege of Auguste Perret, another famous French architect/builder. Design/build worked then, it has to work now.
