My name is Lauren Victoria Hulen and I am from Kansas City, Missouri.  I created my brand, Lauren Victoria Swim, to pursue my passion for designing swimwear. I graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design and Product Development. I am excited to embark on my entrepreneurial career and am actively seeking innovative and important avenues to showcase my work to relevant audiences.

I explore the nuances of unexpected and innovative textures, photography, and digital design. My design aesthetic engages my audience through both whimsy and edge, and finding a nuanced harmony between them. I design for audiences and patrons who express themselves through fashion, and are willing to take risks, exude confidence, and often experiment with hair color, cosmetics, and body art. My swimwear connects the inner majestic mermaid with an expressive rebellious aesthetic.

I have presented as a designer in multiple Stephens College Annual Fashion Shows with multiple ensembles in a variety of garment categories earning the Pattern Making Award with my skills in construction. My graduate collection pushed the boundaries of what Stephens had shown in the past with only few other lingerie collections shown during the 74-year history of the fashion show. My lingerie collection was specifically chosen from the jury of selection by representatives from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) as well as the London School of Design.

Florence Knoll

American designer Florence Knoll, born Florence Schust in 1917, contributed greatly to defining the standard for the contemporary corporate interiors of post-war America. Her architectural background meant that she approached design with an emphasis on the relationship between an object and its space. Knoll’s designs were always simple, though never plain.

During her education Knoll studied under some of the greatest 20th century architects including Eilel Saarinen, Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, and her personal idol Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

In 1941 Florence met with Hans Knoll about working for the furniture company he had just started. The two later married in 1946 and formed Knoll Associates as partners. Together, with her design skills and his business dexterity, the two grew the company into one of the most recognisable furniture brands in style and design of its time.

Knoll only designed new pieces of furniture when the company catalogue did not fulfill her needs. This was the case when she designed her Parallel Bar Lounge Chair series which has been in production for 60 consecutive years.

Florence Knoll Model 17 Maple Desk - 1956 - Knoll

Florence Knoll differed from other contemporary designers of the time in that her pieces were architectural in design where as others, including Eero Saarinen and Harry Bertoia, were producing very sculptural pieces. Knoll’s ability to adapt the lines and tone of modern architecture to suite her work while managing to incorporate warmth through colour and texture led to her work dominating the corporate market before succeeding in domestic markets as well.

Knoll’s Parallel Bar Lounge Chair series demonstrates her geometric style which was heavily influenced by her mentor Mies van der Rohe and the International Style. The simplicity and balance of her design are what makes it truly iconic.
