Scene from Desire? a film about the everyday realities of some Indians who identify as asexual
Some of my thoughts under the cut
The documentary Desire? is a short half-hour film where a several Indian asexuals are interviewed about their experiences being asexual in India. While I love that this film exists and seems like a great introduction for people who might not be aware of asexuality, I did wish there was a deeper dive into Indian asexual experiences and more of a diverse range of experiences shown.
For one, there is no mention of aromanticism at all... in fact, there is a person who says something along the lines of "Everyone falls in love" and that is not refuted by the creators or anyone else being interviewed. While I understand this film is primarily focused on asexuality, I do feel like aromanticism should have at least been mentioned given that the two communities are greatly interlinked.
All the asexuals interviewed seemed to be non-aromantic, sex-repulsed asexuals, who don't masturbate. The documentary does not mention that these experiences among asexuals can vary, and while it mentions the spectrum briefly, it does not really go into it.
I understand that the film is short, and that it focuses primarily on the experiences of the people who were willing to be interviewed, but I still felt like there were a lot of details that were missing and could have been included by the people making the film.
