I’m Peachy, author of fics and ridiculously long comments. Something tells me a lot of authors hold back on gushing about their fics so they don’t seem conceited, and I take that personally. I want to provide a space where I can ask authors to tell me about their fic, damn it!
So, I have a possibly ridiculous but sincere question:
Would you be interested in a casual, sometimes comical, Destiel podcast/interview series where fic authors get to talk about their stories, their writing process, the choices they’re proud of, the details and Easter eggs they snuck in, and all the cool shit they did that they don’t usually get an excuse to explain?
Would You:
Listen to author interviews
Be interested in talking about your own fic
Both
Quietly support this from the bushes
Be interested in helping
Cheer you on, but podcasts are not your cup of tea
Remaining time: 4 days 15 hours
If you are interested in being an early guest, please send me an ask!
it’s kinda hard to tell that it’s dean but it’s supposed to represent heaven and hell, I was thinking of putting Crowley there but I prefer some destiel
Misha Collins as Castiel if he never met Dean Winchester.
Why Apocalypse Castiel Feels So... Wrong.
"Why is Castiel suddenly speaking like he just walked out of Berlin??"
So here's what's actually going on.
Yes, it's still Jimmy Novak's vessel-- same face, same body. In the Apocalypse World, Jimmy apparently still said yes to Castiel (or at least Castiel is still using that vessel). There's never any indication that Castiel switched to a different vessel.
The accent and uniform are not because Jimmy is German.
They're because that version of Castiel has been shaped by a completely different world.
The Apocalypse World is essentially a militarized dictatorship after Michael wins. Angels become Heaven's enforcers, hunting and executing humans. Alternate Castiel is no longer the awkward, curious angel who fell in love with humanity. He's an authoritarian officer.
Now about the uniform...
A lot of fans immediately clocked that it resembles a fascist military uniform. It's not literally a Nazi uniform-- there are no swastikas or direct Nazi insignia-- but the costume department absolutely leaned into that aesthetic: long leather coat, stark tailoring, military rigidity. It's visual shorthand for "authoritarian regime."
And the accent?
That's actually Misha Collins making an acting choice.
It's never explained in-universe why Apocalypse World Castiel speaks with that accent. The show doesn't say he learned German or anything like that.
The best theories are:
Heaven reorganized differently after the apocalypse, and Castiel adapted to whoever held power.
He's spent years stationed in Europe or serving under a different celestial hierarchy.
The accent is symbolic rather than literal-- it instantly makes him feel foreign, cold, and emotionally distant from "our" Castiel.
Personally?
I think it's almost theatrical.
Our Castiel gradually becomes more human. His voice softens. He hesitates. He smiles. He gets confused by pop culture.
Apocalypse Castiel does the opposite.
Everything is clipped.
Precise.
Controlled.
Even the accent creates distance. You hear him speak and immediately think,
"That's not our Cas."
It's honestly a clever acting trick. Misha didn't change the face-- you'd still recognize Jimmy Novak instantly-- but he changed the rhythm, posture, eye contact, and speech enough that your brain goes, "So thats what happens if Castiel doesn't fall."
Also, another time where Cass is ruthless.
The pearl-smash timeline.
I couldn't find the scene but I got the script.
The key thing is: our Castiel is the anomaly.
Most versions of Castiel we see are colder, more obedient, and far less attached to humanity. The show repeatedly suggests that the events of Season 4-- especially pulling Dean out of Hell and continuing to work with the Winchesters-- changed him.
# "I don't know you."
One of the funniest things about alternate Castiels is that they all have the same face...
...and the personality of a corporate email.
Apocalypse World Castiel?
German.
Authoritarian.
Looks like he schedules executions between lunch meetings.
The pearl timeline Castiel?
Immediately starts choking Dean.
No hesitation.
No blinking.
Just:
"I don't know you."
And I think that's the point.
People always ask,
"Why is our Castiel so... different?"
Simple.
He made one catastrophic mistake.
He saved Dean Winchester.
Seriously.
That one decision ruined this angel forever.
He was supposed to rescue one righteous man from Hell and go back to being Heaven's obedient little soldier.
Instead he got infected.
With humanity.
With free will.
With sarcasm.
With pop culture.
With personal opinions.
With feelings.
Every alternate Castiel who never forms that bond with Dean ends up feeling... wrong.
They're efficient.
Loyal.
Emotionless.
Exactly what Heaven wanted.
Our Castiel?
He commits treason every other Tuesday.
Starts a civil war.
Becomes best friends with humanity.
Adopts the Winchesters as his weird little flightless family.
Learns to smile.
Learns to disobey.
Learns to love.
Dean didn't just change Castiel.
He derailed Heaven's entire operating system.
Turns out, pulling one stubborn hunter out of Hell had one very unfortunate side effect...
