@destinationtoast tagged me in a meme about posting your top "additional tags" among your AO3 works. I have in fact looked at this before and it cracks me up every time........alcohol.
It is interesting to see different kinds of tags, in my mind at least, on this list. "Alcohol" and "smoking" are pure content warnings that I use whenever a drink or a cigarette make an appearance, no matter how brief.
The AU tags are descriptive, as are "canon [x] character"—but even those vary. As a rule, I write Charles as a wheelchair user in AUs (my only works where he isn't are divergent from First Class), so I'm trying to indicate that fact, partly because tons of people do not write him as disabled in modern AUs, and I do think that choice matters. Erik is, of course, Jewish in every single fic I've written, but I tend to leave off that tag unless characters discuss Judaism or, like, "there is a scene set at a seder" etc etc. (I've now done Rosh Hashanah, Hanukkah, and Passover scenes...Purim's gotta be next, since I'm so committed to the "alcohol" tag.)
The only ones that feel like "themes" are politics, telepathy, and siblings—and pretty fitting, if you asked me to summarize my fics, especially politics. If anything, 8 out of 16 tagged as such seems way too low...maybe I should go back and tag the rest lol.
I'd love to see other folks' tags! I'm also super curious to see if you analyze this, @destinationtoast. It makes me think about the discourse around "AO3 tags" in pro publishing right now. There are only 10 tags here and I would sort them in so many different buckets; some of these publishers are slapping on a bunch of disparate labels (meet cute! grumpy/sunshine! traumatic past!) and calling it a day.
