Destiny Quest: A Review

“Destiny Quest: Legion of Shadows” is an RPG gamebook written by Michael J Ward, which combines elements of a choose-your-own-adventure novel with a pen and paper roleplaying game.

While this isn't the kind of thing I am aspiring to, I bought and played through the book to get an idea of the storytelling system and interactive elements.

Storytelling:

The book is actually very plot-light. You start out as an amnesiac outsider with nothing but a mysterious mark on your arm and the instructions of a dying stranger to begin with. Over the course of three acts you travel to three different areas, go on a lot of different side quests in ascending difficulty level, and become a major hero who tries to stop the forces of darkness from invading this world and killing everyone etc. etc. Not particularly original, but entirely suited to the fantasy roleplaying audience.

The plot development isn't so much a story as it is a sandbox of different mini-quests with dramatic cutscenes interspersed here and there. There are maps in the middle of the book where you can choose where to go, and the mini-quests are colour-coded for difficulty, but the main purpose of the quests appears to be entertainment and loot. The equipment and items you get from adventuring replace the usual experience points system in increasing the skills and attributes of your character, who can be developed as one of three standard RPG main classes: warrior, mage and rogue.

Digital Interaction:

The book is mainly a pencil and paper affair, with character sheets to record health, stats and equipment included in the book itself. However, through their website you can also download character sheets and a reference/glossary pdf to spare your book. There’s also a forum, so you can involve yourself in the game community, walkthroughs and guides, additional quests and purchasable items, as well as updates on the sequel being released in November.

While I enjoyed playing Destiny Quest, its interactivity is much more of the traditional roleplaying kind and while it enjoys some additional digital features through the website, the only idea that resonates with my own is the concept of the separate three acts. An idea that had already occurred to me long before I saw this on the shelves. But at the very least it has narrowed my field of research.

Man, Rerin fails as hard in Destiny Quest as he ever did in Call of Cthulhu. Possibly more so. 

Restarting quests won't help when it's his stats that are against me and not the dice. STOP HAVING SUCH LOW ARMOUR AND SPEED SCORES FFS
