An Interview with Weedeater
Recently, my right hand Melissa, who fronts Doomed & Stoned Midwest, lined up an interview with the one-and-only Dixie Dave, the legendary smokin’, tonkin’, shotgunin’ singer and bassist for the influential Wilmington, N.C. sludge machine WEEDEATER! Travis Owen (drummer) also chimed into the conversation, when the band played this week in Indianapolis. Weedeater, rounded out by guitarist, Dave “Shep” Shepherd, will be appearing at DESTROYER FEST in St. Petersburg, Florida this weekend (11/15). Doomed & Stoned is proud to be a sponsor of the non-profit event, which will go to support the Epilepsy Services Foundation. (BTW, I didn’t know who specifically to credit for the photos above, so if you know, just send me a message.) Thanks to YouTuber spiffydigs for the video clips (not from Indy, unfortunately, but still a fantastic show the week before in Philly). And now, without further adieu, here’s Melissa and Dixie Dave! (BillyGoat)
YOU RECENTLY SIGNED WITH SEASON OF MIST. I UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE A NEW ALBUM COMING OUT SOON
Dixie: We do! We’ve already recorded the new album. Recorded it out in Chicago and it’ll be out sometime in the spring…..end of March to end of April. It’ll be out around then.
HOW DOES IT COMPARE WITH “JASON…THE DRAGON?”
Dixie: I think it fits right in like it ought to. As far as I’m concerned, comparing with it - we don’t really care about that. What we do care is that it’s in the same vein of things we like to do.
Travis: I would like to say something about that. Whenever a three-piece adds a new member, it’s always very evident. One thing that I didn’t want, being new for the band, was for any ol’ Weedeater fan to pick up one of the first four albums then listen to the fifth one, and for it to sound like something was different. So I personally worked very hard….
Dixie: Yes, he did.
Travis: ….to make sure that will never come up. “Oh, they’re not the same ol’ Weedeater because they got a new drummer”
Dixie: The continuity is there. He did a really great job. And we didn’t ask him to do that.
Travis: I just did what I felt needed to be done.
AH, THATS EXCELLENT! CAN WE EXPECT ANOTHER WEEDEATER - INFUSED COVER SONG?
Dixie: We have thought about several covers that we would like to do, and yes you can expect. Hell, you can expect anything (laughs). Yeah we all think about doing shit like that, just for fun. And we will, at some point. It’ll probably be a bit abstract.
ITS GREAT TO SEE YOU’RE ADDING MORE US DATES, INCLUDING YOUR UPCOMING APPEARANCE AT THE DESTROYER FEST. DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS OF GOING OVERSEA ANY TIME SOON?
Dixie: Yes, we do. It’s actually not really our fault that we have all these US dates (laughs). Not that it’s not really cool. But yeah, when the record comes out, we’ll spend a great amount of time elsewhere. Other than the US, I’d like to think they’d have us back. Not necessarily to play, just to get back (laughs)
I KNOW YOU HAVE GOT SOME CRAZY STORIES OF BEING ON THE ROAD?
Dixie: I have too many of them to count. And they are forever unfolding, a new one will probably happen this evening -and that will come later.
WEEDEATER HAS QUITE A CULT FOLLOWING OF LONG TIME FANS AS WELL AS A NEW GENERATION OF FANS, PARTLY BECAUSE OF THE INTERNET. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT HAVING A YOUNGER FAN BASE?
Dixie: It’s killer. Im glad that people appreciate it. Younger kids never really when we were younger. It’s a good thing. I guess this entire genre has come full circle in one way or another. We were sticking to it from the beginning either way. We never tried to do what was popular - we just did whatever we liked to do. But, it’s awesome. It’s good that people appreciate it more than they used to.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE INCREASE OF BANDS THAT ARE PLAYING THIS TYPE OF MUSIC?
Dixie: I think it’s great. I think everyone in the world should play whatever they want to play. If this is what they want to play, or something similiar to that, then that’s what they should do.
DO YOU FEEL THAT WEEDEATER IS DEVELOPING AS A BAND, OR DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU HAVE YOUR OWN STYLE AND ITS BETTER TO NOT FIX WHATS NOT BROKEN?
Dixie: I don’t feel like we’re evolving at all, I feel we’re the same band we’ve always been. It’s supposed to be cave metal, it’s supposed to be easy to understand. And I think that it is, still. I hope that it is. I wish not to evolve.
YOU CERTAINLY DON’T NEED TO! SO I HEAR YOU HAVE A HEAD SHOP. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?
Dixie: One of my very best friends in the world owns a portion of a franchise of head shops in North Carolina, and I’ve worked with him for twelve years. He’s a very good friend of mine and it allows me to have something to do when I’m home. It’s taxable. Not that the other thing isn’t! He’s a great dude. I love him very much. So I’ve been working there for twelve years. When I’m at the house I’ll work there occasionally. More so recently. I’ve been taking on a bunch of hours from people, just because I was bored and needed to be somewhere. And it’s a good place to be. Come check it out!
WHATS GOING ON WITH BUZZOVEN? IS THAT SOMETHING YOU CAN COMMENT ON?
Dixie: Yeah, I can comment on it. I’m not exactly sure what’s going on with Buzzoven. I’ve always said I’d be willing to help out and play bass any time I was needed to do so. They know that. I think they have some plans to record some things sometime in the future, but I’m not entirely sure.
OKAY. LASTLY, ITS BEEN ABOUT FIVE YEARS SINCE THE SHOTGUN INCIDENT. DOES THAT AFFECT YOU IN ANY WAY STILL?
Dixie: My other leg is actually fucked up from it, but I’ll be fine. I manage to get by.
WELL DIXIE I KNOW YOU GUYS GOT A BIG EVENING AHEAD OF YOU, THANKS SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO TALK WITH DOOMED & STONED. WE’RE BIG FANS OF WHAT YOU DO.
Dixie: No problem, take care.
Update! Today our bud Frank Huang of Pit Full of Shit posted this full set from the recent Weedeater show at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn. Thanks, Frank!
