The Destructive Power of Words
Recently, we shared about spiritual projections. These are debilitating thoughts that come to the heart and mind of the believer. They may seem to arise from within our own heart and mind, but they actually come from outside spiritual sources in very precise ways. They are designed to weaken and hurt the heart of the believer. These projections have many labels. Here are just two:
“Fiery Darts” - Ephesians 6:16 (AV)
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery or (flaming) darts of the wicked.
“Whispers out of the dust” - Isaiah 29:4 (AV)
And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.
When such tactics prove to be ineffective because the believer has learned to digest and assimilate the word of God, the enemy will raise up actual people to mouth his destructive messages. It is then we discover the power of destructive words. Here are some examples of such types of people:
Spiritual Enticers - 2 Peter 2:18 (ESV)
For, speaking loud boasts of folly, (or great swelling words of vanity) they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error.
Spiritual Manipulators - Jude 16 (ESV)
These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters (their mouth speaks great swelling words), showing favoritism to gain advantage.
Spiritual Blood Suckers - Daniel 7:25 (AV)
He shall speak great words against the most High and shall wear out the saints of the most High, ….
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be …. abusive, …. slanderous, …. swollen with conceit, …... Avoid such people.
Here in 2Timothy 3, we see abusers, slanderers, and people swollen with conceit. The Greek words add to our understanding here: abusive refers to speaking blasphemous words against someone. The word is often just transliterated from the Greek as “blasphemy.” “To speak words to abuse, revile, and destroy the good name of a man or God.” Someone who hurls insults and slander about another. The content may be the same or similar to a projection, but now it is in the mouth of another person and coming with actual sound. Slanderers are people who falsely accuse and divide people without reason. Slander is something spoken, while libel is most often written. Slander is “the utterance of false charges or misrepresentations which defame and damage another’s reputation.” Spiritual slander is designed to destroy a person’s self-image as well as destroy a person’s status in the eyes of others. Swollen with conceit refers to persons with an excessive appreciation or exaggeration of one’s own worth or virtue. Often these types of people denigrate and despise others. Such as the Pharisee in Luke 18:
The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
In seasons when we are under the stress and strain of such barrages of words, it is so very important that we draw close to the Lord and learn to live by what God says and thinks about us. It can be very difficult to deal with the destructive power of such words. But here is a promise or two that have helped me immeasurably:
No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.
Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifies. Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Lord Jesus, you uphold the entire universe by the word of your power. So it is no problem for you to sustain us through the showers that come from the expression of the power of destructive words. Teach us to hear and believe what you have spoken to our hearts and minds. Amen!!!
