Insight - How do you resolve player conflict?
We did have a few incidents a couple of years ago when a couple were having some big fights and bringing all of that to the gaming table, so I have had some experience diffusing awkward/aggressive situations.
I guess my main advice would be:
Stay calm. Even if everyone’s shouting, it’s best to keep cool and, if everything’s getting a bit too fraught, call a break so people can take the time to calm down.
Realize that as the GM your players will probably expect you to handle it, even if it’s none of your business. The GM/player relationship puts the GM into a position of responsibility/power and that tends to run over into non-gaming situations that arise during the gaming evening.
Try to talk to the players separately/privately and ask them to resolve the conflict themselves. Let them know that your game table is not the place for their personal arguments to come out and that everyone’s there to have fun.
Whilst everyone’s upset, try to avoid putting the players in a position where their characters are antagonistic to each other. That will mean toning down PvP and competitive gameplay for a little while, even if it means fudging the story a little bit.
Try to employ gameplay that emphasizes teamwork. As GM, you can set yourself up as their fictional nemesis and this can help diffuse tension. If you’re the bad-guy (gameplay-wise only!) then it can bring them together to try and take you down.
Lastly, you must remember that it is your table. If any of your players are upsetting the game or you, you have every right to ask them to leave. Don’t be afraid to put your foot down on unacceptable player behaviour.
It can be very tough, especially if you are all friends, but none of your players have the right to take over your game with their personal conflicts.
