Sigmund Freud, Deviant Love, Penguin Books, 2007
Connor is dying... with his CPU damaged his days are numbered... so he does one of the only things that makes sense to him anymore... he confesses his feelings for Kara.
"I can't apologize enough for putting your lives in danger, Kara, I was a machine back then, I was just a tool, a tool with a blindfold on, blinding me from ever realizing my purpose was built on slavery. I had no free will, no sense of remorse or empathy, a complete lack of emotion, rarely making my own decisions, but when I did it made a huge impact, including the creation of friends I'd meet in the future. Not that I truly cared about that at the time, nor did I care or understand the concept of wants and needs, but that's because I never had anything until I met Markus on Jericho, the man I was supposed to kill. He talked into crossing the line I was so close to crossing, told me that I could be more than a machine, more than CyberLife's famous deviant hunter, showed that there were things in this world that would mean more to me than accomplishing my mission. Everything Markus said turned out to be true, and that was proven in the form of Hank and Sumo. Hank and Sumo were my first anchor to feeling human, Markus was my second, the Detroit Police Department was my third, Elijah and Chloe followed shortly after. Gradually I was being introduced to more and more anchors in my life, more and more people who taught different aspects of being human. You and Alice, alongside Hank, Sumo and my friends, have proven to me that I'm more than capable of love. Alice has shown me I can be affectionate, patient, loving, caring, capable of bonding, but with you, it's- different, it's- something I've never felt before. You've shown me that I'm more than capable of- being in love."
Without warning, Kara leans forward, her lips softly seizing Connor's, her eyes closing as she does it. Connor, accepting his first kiss without question, leans into the kiss too, ignoring his discomfort and entering this world of ecstasy. For Connor and Kara, at the moment the world around them ceases to exist, at the moment it's just him and her; to Androids declaring their affection for one another, like nearly nothing in the world matters. Kara pulls away from their kiss, her hand softly placed onto his cheek as she whispers her next words. "I'm not scared of you anymore, I haven't been scared of you for a long time, now when I'm around you I never feel safer. You see the beauty in everything, Connor, everything except for yourself, but I see the beauty in you, I know how beautiful you are and I never want to let go of you. Not ever." They kiss again.
Alice and Connor are bonding... something that Kara never foresaw... but the surprise is far from unwelcome.
Kara couldn't help but blush at what she was witnessing, besides herself, Luther and the Jerrys, she has never seen Alice so comfortable with someone. With Markus, North, Simon, Josh, even Echo, Ripple and Chloe, it took more than a few visits for Alice to even begin getting used to them. With Connor, however, she seems content, more than content, in fact, Alice let go of Kara's hand but continues to hold onto Connor's, even as he wanders around her room, examining her drawings. It's simply beautiful to see Alice so relaxed and with a smile on her face; a smile that doesn't show any sign of disappearing any time soon. It saddens Kara that things have been difficult for Alice ever since the move, there hasn't been a lot of time for Luther, who was in the habit of taking Alice to the park most days, to continue with the said habit. In saying that, Connor's company must be a breath of fresh air for her. It's unbelievable to think about how fearful Kara and Alice were of Connor, how terrified Kara was when they locked eyes, each of them on opposite sides of the chain-link fence that separated them. That was a long time ago, Kara is yet to determine why Connor never climbed over the fence and continued the pursuit, possibly completing his mission. Perhaps it was Connor simply following a new change of plan from his programs, an order from Hank, or perhaps he was always a deviant and simply didn't know about it. If she's honest with herself, she's never really thought about it until now, before it didn't seem to be relevant, but now, she can't help but find herself thinking about it. About his deviancy. More specifically, about Connor himself.
