Based on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it looks like Jon Bernthal is being typecast as a friend/ally of Tom Holland (Pilgrimage, The Odyssey, SM:BND). What makes this funnier is that it looks like Robert Pattison is simultaneously being typecast as someone who has beef with Tom (The Devil all the Time, The Odyssey).

Taking the late shift wasn’t on your list for New Years eve; not that it mattered, you didn’t know anyone in this tiny backwoods town. Didn’t mean you hadn’t wanted to jump a town or two over to drink yourself under the table. But when your boss, the Sheriff, asks you to cover a shift, you do it. Being the first female deputy in Ohio meant that your boss was always looking to test you.
Your eyes drifted further down the office, and the blinds to the Sheriff's office were open. Lee’s broad frame fills up a lot of the window. The man was freshly divorced and miserable as hell. Not as miserable as he had been when you first showed up. Making remarks about how he’d already hired a new secretary, when you’d shown him your credentials and schooling, he’d just sighed.
Then you’d been hired, much to everyone's chagrin and a lot of hazing. Decorating your desk in a large array of fake flowers, to the point you couldn’t work at it until you had cleared it off. Your squad car had various genitalia scrawled over it in pink and purple paint. It wasn’t surprising, in fact it was tame compared to other things you’d had happen in other states. One was being dosed with laxatives, which had ended up with you in the hospital with dehydration. It hadn’t been what had pushed you to Ohio though, no that had been your dickbag of a Dad. Nothing kills hiring opportunity like a tainted lastname.
There was something about Lee that had slowly crawled under your skin over the last few months. The heat settles low in your guts like a heated blanket on a cold day. The man watched you like a hawk, criticized every move you made, and constantly made sure you knew your place. At the same time, he was always the first one to ask you to join him on patrol. He made sure you ate, that you got home safe. Little things. Things that most of the other pea brains didn't seem to notice. You did. It's what made you good at this job, you noticed everything. In the same way, Lee noticed everything.
You’d been warned, by the secretary, librarian, half the hospital, that Lee wasn’t a good man. A drunk, a fighter, someone who loved power. He had a reputation in town, and was known to deal with unsavory people. That dealt with drugs, sex trade, and other unsheriff-like things. Apparently, that was what had led to his wife leaving him.
There were worse things. That was your first thought. A fucked up thought; but you'd been with worse, much worse.
Power was intoxicating. Anyone who goes into law enforcement, not craving power, is lying to themselves. As for dealing with unsavory people, at least he knew who they were and had a leash on what they did. Was he really all that bad? He could be worse.
Lee came out of the door grabbing his coat, barking your name. “Com’ on. Let's go for a patrol.”
You didn't reply, just closed your report and grabbed your jacket and hat. Before double checking you had your gear. Then following him out into the parking lot. It was chilly outside. You tugged a scarf around your neck, mittens forgotten on your desk. Lee opened your door, barely making eye contact before going around to his own door. Sharp words at the tip of your tongue, about not needing a gentleman. Instead, you just slide onto the creaky seats and close the door.
“Where we heading?” You ask, shifting in the seat as he takes off down a main street. Expecting him to go towards the twenty-four-hour dinner, or the strip club.
“Just wanna take a look at the new development, just on the outskirts.” He says smoothly, like that was normal.
The development wasn’t anything exciting, it was barely a development, half a dozen Stepford like homes in a neat little cul-de-sac. Developers promised to build more once these were filled. It was as low crime as could be, the place was locked up, the worst that could happen was some vandalism. The chance of that happening New Year's eve was low, even for here.
Lee drove over there, you glancing out the window at the various Christmas lights still decorating the houses. One had a whole jesus in the manger set up on their front lawn. Others were just dark, it was around 11 pm, so seeing someone out would be more suspicious than not seeing anyone.
They passed through a couple of empty lots that had been laid out for more cul-de-sacs. They’d left a lot of larger trees making the place feel more remote than it was. Lee drove right in, sitting you both in the middle of the space. No one would see the cuisier unless they came down the road. This should make you nervous, your boss driving you to a remote part of town, in the middle of the night.
Your fingers rub over each other, trying to get some circulation into them. From the corner of your eye, you can see Lee watching you. He was always watching you. It felt different this time, not as clinical.
He reaches over and turns up the heat without being asked, music off. He was never a big radio guy. The clink of the cop radio landing on the dash as he shifts in his seat, leather jacket squeaking against the leather seats. You don’t say anything; he was the one that took you here. You're half expecting him to shoot you, or tell you he needs you to do a drug run.
“Why you come all the way out "ere to be a deputy?” Lee asks, his arm draping over the back of the seat, his hand almost touching the back of your neck.
You shrug, “Same reason anyone moves to Bumfuck, Ohio.”
He lets out a small chuff that could almost be a laugh. “Exactly. No one moves to Ohio. So why?”
Your tongue pushes against the back of your teeth, trying to find words to explain why. “I needed somewhere that no one would know me. Or know my family. I wanted to be judged by who I am, rather than where I came from.”
“And being a female deputy, in an all male field?” Lee pushes, there is no venom in his words, just curiosity. It's straight up unlike him, usually he was happy to poke fun at your choices and lifestyle.
“Not sure. Runs in the family.” You try to keep the tone easy. What you want to say is that it's a giant fuck you to your Dad.
His finger barely brushes over the edge of your jacket, almost like he is testing to see if you’d notice. You want to lean into it, which is stupid, he was your fucking boss, your superior. Be a great look, bending over for him, first female deputy gets hired cause she's banging her boss.
“Yeah, I looked in on your family. Your Daddy is something,” He drawls, which shouldn't make heat pool in your lower stomach. “Sheriff, councilman, mayor, sitting congressman, real politician that one.”
“You ran a background check on me?” You look over at him, his blue eyes finding yours. Still blue even in the dark of the night. Hating how handsome you found him. Sharp jaw, clean cut haircut, a little soft in the middle. Unable to stop your mind from wandering to things less than professional.
It was his turn to shrug, “I background check everyone.”
The two of you stared at the other for a moment, “Sounds a like you did a bit more digging into my background.”
“Not a lot of women would want to be a deputy. Much less work here.” He says, his eyes going over your face, the cruiser suddenly feeling much smaller and warmer.
“I am not most women,” Was the only thing you could come up with. “Besides, I like this job.”
He looks away, looking out the front window, staring at one of the houses. “You're good at it. Put the rest of them to shame.”
“Thanks, Sheriff.” You say quietly, not expecting that from him. Not even rememberinf the last time someone had praised you. Hating that it made your cheeks pink.
“Lee, is fine. Not like anyone else is here.” Lee replies, his hand comes up and the back of his knuckles run across your cheek.
You should pull back, not lean in, not want him to keep touching you. This is wrong, so wrong. You're supposed to be setting an example, not giving in. It's been so long, since anyone has touched you, and you'd be lying if you hadn't thought about it. About him. What it feel like to be under him, on top, being taken from behind? You have to force yourself not squirm on the creaky seats.
“Why are we out here?” You ask, words barely audible, trying to find an excuse to keep from doing something stupid.
He points out the window at one of the finished houses. “That one's mine. Or at least I thought it would be. Not sure now.” His eyes glaze a little, emotion that he isn't letting go of. “Wanted a lot of things. Thought a nice new house would fix my marriage. She still left.”
You don't know what to say. Lee wasn't exactly one to spill emotions to anyone, much less to you. It pulled at the few soft spots you had left, he was just as alone as you were.
“Been living in this big empty house for months.” Lee continues, lighting a cigarette. He passes to you, you take a drag before handing it back. “Was surprised you took this shift.” Clicking his tongue as he takes another drag. “Do you want to come in?”
Your mouth opens and closes several times. “We're still on shift?” As he hands the cigarette back to you. It's weirdly intimate sharing the smoke between you.
“I am still the Sheriff.” Lee huffs and turns off the car. Taking another drag of the cigarette before stubbing it out.
You don't wait to follow him, getting out of the cruiser and walking to the door. Looking around the small neighborhood.
“Don't worry, no one else has moved in yet.” Lee tosses over his shoulder as he opens the door.
You follow him inside, surprised to find the space warm and power on. Lee shuffles off his coat and hangs his hat, you do the same. Your brain is spinning in circles. Why the hell had he brought you here? What were you doing?
He flicks on a few lights and you follow him into the home. It still smells like paint, the living room you pass is empty. A set of stairs across from it leads upstairs, behind that is a kitchen and dining room. It's as sparse as the rest of the place. The kitchen is mostly bare except for a pile of washed dishes and a dining table with four chairs. It all could have come with the place, it was almost sterile.
“I haven't gotten around to furnishing it,” Lee states, no sadness in his voice, just a fact of life.
“You could stop taking the extra shifts.” You reply, accepting the beer he hands to you from the fridge. “Or find someone to help with it. Lucy is always dropping off goodies for you. Seems to have an eye for you.”
Lee’s brows go up as he sips on his own beer. “Not interested in Lucy.”
“Not your type, Lee?" You can't help the teasing tone, as you take a drink from the beer.
He sighs, “not interested in’er. I am curious about someone else.” You look at him, leaning against the counter. Picture of casualty, his white shirt stretched across his frame, tie loose. Eyes flowing over your form, beer going up to his full lips.
A part of you wants to hide, to tuck yourself away. The way he was looking you over was anything but subtle. He'd invited you into his house, his new house, tucked away from anyone. If Lee tried to do anything, no one would know; he was physically much bigger and stronger than you. Despite all your training, you doubt you could outmaneuver him. Another part of you wanted him to do something. To be the first to move and snap the tension that had been building between you both all evening.
“Who do you got your eye on, Lee?” You can't help how your lips wrap around his name. Similar to how they wrap around the bottle. How many times had you moaned his name with your face buried in pillows, fingers pushing inside?
He moves forward, the same way a cat would move towards a mouse. You feel the counter behind you, the smooth stone pushing against your back. Swallowing you look up at him, his big body easily covering your own.
“Who do you think, Sweets.” Lee drawls, the vowels dripping with honey. There was no question in his voice.
You couldn’t help licking your lips, beer clinking against the counter. His eyes follow the movement of your tongue before flicking back up to your eyes. The heat of his body felt through your clothes.
“Never called me 'Sweets' before,” You breath out. “A name you save for the girls you like?”
Lee puts his beer bottle down beside yours, placing both his hands on either side of you. His face is level with yours.
“Don't deflect, I've seen how you look at me. How you take any extra shifts that line up with mine. Fresh coffee in the pot. Cruiser always clean.” He points out all the little details you thought had gone unnoticed. Embarrassment flooded your face. “Going well above the call of the job, dontcha think?”
You just nodded your head, stunned into silence. A grin spread across his face, wicked in a way that should have made your stomach drop. Instead, it just added fuel to the fire. His big hand came up to tuck a stray hair behind your ear. Head tipped like he was going to go for your neck. Finger pads running along your jaw to tip your head up. Clicking his tongue as your face went red.
“Got you stunned into silence,” He mocks, “Didn’t think that could even happen. Always got something to add, to say, most of the time you’re right too. Confident, I’d say cocky, but you don’t have one of those.”
The breath stolen out of your chest, body locked up, your throat working to get enough saliva to speak. “Didn’t know you paid so much attention, Lee.”
The man leans closer, his nose running along your cheek. “I’ve been paying attention to you, since you walked in the front door in a suit with an attitude.” His tongue darts out and licks up the side of your neck, you shiver, not out of fear. “Knew you’d be sweet. Couldn’t rush you, stubborn woman like you need patience and time.”
“That why you brought me out here?” You ask, trying hard not to move and thread your fingers into his hair. To kiss him, and let him take you right here on the counter.
Lee chuckles, kissing along where his tongue went, your hands finally leaving your side to card up into his hair. Feeling him lean into the touch, humming as he grabs your face. Your eyes go wide, as he leans down to kiss you. It’s not soft, there is no gentleness in the way he bites and sucks at your lips.
His large body cages you in place, the counter biting into your back. One hand cups the back of his head, the other grabs onto his shoulder as he pushes your legs apart. A whimper leaves you as he pushes himself between your legs, stomach pressing against yours, the hardness not hidden behind his slacks. You bite at this tongue, making him grunt as his hand fists in your hair, dragging you in the direction he wants you to go.
“Was going to have my way with you,” He pulls back and looks down at your body, watching your breasts move as you pant. “Wanted to know if you’d let me. Or would you put up a fight?”
You bite your lip, wondering if he would have let you walk away if you said no? Something told you he wouldn't have, would have taken what he wanted.
“Do you want me to fight back?” You breathe out, watching the way his eyes flick up to you. They’d gone from blue to almost black in a fraction of a second.
Lee doesn’t look away, “Yes,” It's almost a whisper, a promise, a secret exposed.
Not letting the words settle, your hand that was against his chest pushes hard. Lee seemed to expect this and pushes back, the hand in your hair pulling hard making you let out a cry. Your legs are already spread apart, one leg wraps around his as you push again trying to get him to topple over. He just laughs, hands moving from your hair to your legs and lifting you with ease. Your back slams onto the counter with a thud, making you wince. His much larger hands move quickly to grab your wrist, cuffs off his belt in a practice motion. The metal clicks around your wrist tight enough that it will leave a bruise.
It doesn’t stop you from trying to kick and squirm away from him. Lee uses his size to his advantage and flips you onto your front, grabbing and dragging your wrists behind your neck. You groan and cuss at him. Which prompts laughter to escape from him, as he leans forward and takes a deep breath behind your ear.
“Fuck, you smell good,” Lee growls, free hand pawing at your pants. “I know you’re going to be soaked once I get these off.”
You whimper and keep trying to fight, the cuffs digging into your hands as you feel your duty belt get dropped on the floor. Button on your pants being popped open as he grinds himself against your ass.
“Should have known,” You try and squirm away, the fight is half-assed, but you keep up with the role-play. “You’d be into someone almost half your age.”
Lee chuckles as he pushes your pants down, giving a tug on your wrist making you whimper. “Says the girl who ran from her Daddy.”
He kicks your feet wide, fingers going down between them. Your breath hitches, his fingers are rough as he grazes over your folds, you try not to push towards them. The need to fight is gone as he circles your clit. Lee’s lips pressed against the shell of your ear.
“You're so wet,” He hushes, “Is this what you’ve wanted?” Rubs his clit between two of his thick fingers, you bite your lip, unable to stop the moan. “Wanted me to bend you over, and play with you.”
You try to buck back as he continues to play with the sensitive bundle of nerves. “Fuck Lee, goddman asshole.”
He slaps your ass for moving, making you shudder, your body spasming as he runs a finger down your core and slips one inside you. Your eyes go wide as you gasp, the slick side of the digit making you clamp down around him.
“Oh, I am going to fuck you,” Lee leans down and bits at your side, leaving a deep bruise on your side. “Going to fill you up so good you’ll never want anyone else.”
Thrashing more, Lee grabs the cuffs and yanks, making you gasp as he slips another finger in at the same time.
“Fuck you’re so tight,” He groans, as you keep squirming, your mouth falling open as he works you like he would a weapon. “I know how much you want this. Soft, wet, whore for me to fuck.”
You swear you don’t mean to push back as he thrusts in, but your mind is already starting to melt as heat pools low in your back. He keeps working you until you're so close you could scream. Then he stops and you howl.
“No, no, please,” You whine, you’d be embarrassed in any other situation, but your clit is twitching with lack of attention right now.
Lee’s hand hits your ass several times making you squeal and whimper. “Not cuming until I am inside you. Beg for it.”
You grit your teeth not wanting to give in, but he just smacks your ass again. The more you hesitate the more he spanks you, to the point you wonder if you’ll be able to sit tomorrow. Tears are forming at the corners of your eyes as he grabs your ass and squeezes it in his large hands
“Come on, tell your Daddy how much you want him to fuck you.” Lee cusses at you, the filthy words running down your neck.
“Pease,” You chock out, ready to fall to your knees if it means he will finally fuck you. “Please, Lee. Please fuck me.”
“Not Lee,” He hisses, yanking on the cuffs, you can hear him undoing his pants. Lee’s fat cock is rubbing against where you’re unbearably sensitive.
The word is on your tongue, but some stubborn part of you still doesn’t want to say it. Not wanting to admit just how much it turns you on. Even though you’re bent over his counter with your ass in the air practically sobbing for him.
“Please fuck me, Daddy.” You finally say, it’s so soft that you barely hear it.
Lee takes this personally and slaps your ass again so hard you let out a scream. “Louder, you dirty slut.”
“Fuck me, Daddy,” You finally yell, and he takes no time to push his thick cock inside in one dirty thrust. “Oh my god.”
Your breath is knocked out of you, the burn making the tears finally fall across your cheeks. You'd swear he was hitting your lungs with how deep he was. Whimpering your whole body goes still, his hands gripping your hips. You can feel his stomach against your back, the way his tie rubs against your skin.
“Fuck, you’re so tight, Sweerts.” Lee groans as he rocks his hips, your hands clench and pull at the cuffs. “Know it's a lot, but you look so good. Wish you could see how your pussy pulls and stretches around my cock.”
A moan escapes you as he starts up a slow pace, and fuck are you going to feel this tomorrow. His cock was dragging at every sensitive spot, and you didn’t know you could take so much. The head of his cock pushes against your cervix, making you see stars as you push back against him.
“So big. Oh god, Lee,” You whine, as he starts to fuck harder into you. “Yespleasemore.”
He moans, spanking your ass which makes you squeeze impossibly tighter around him. The pace is almost punishing, and yet you can feel your orgasm building again. Body shaking with each shutter. Lee grabs the cuffs lifting your chest off the counter. He lets go so that he can take both hands, sliding them under your shirt, and squeezing your breasts. You stand on tiptoes so that he doesn’t slip out, if he could even slip out. Rough hands palming at your nipples, as he kisses and sucks along your neck.
“Fuckin perfect,” He praises as his hips snap, fingers pulling at your nipples. “Going to fill you up so good, going to be dripping. Take you here on every shift and fuck you until you can’t see straight.”
You nod your head, tipping your neck to the side so he can lick and suck at the skin there.
“You want that don’t you?” Lee mutters as one hand keeps playing with your nipples, the other going lower to press against your stomach. You look down to see a visible bulge there, a moan escaping you.
“Tell me,” He presses against where his cock is. “Tell me you want that. Want to be my plaything, my little cum whore.”
You know if you don’t answer he’ll slap your ass, mouth opening and closing. “Yesyesyes, I’ll be yours. I’ll do what you want. Pleaseplease.”
His hand moves lower and your body jerks hard as he presses against your clit. “That’s it, know you’re close.” Lee sets a punishing pace that verges on overstimulation as he rubs at your clit. “Come for me, come for your Daddy.”
Eyes rolling back you're pretty sure you’re going to black out as waves of pleasure start to roll through you. He doesn’t ease up and it keeps going as he keeps fucking into you. You aren’t sure when your legs give out, but Lee’s big hands grab your hips and steady you. Nothing stops him from fucking into you until he is groaning your name into your ear. His cock is twitching as hot spurts of cum fill you until it’s dripping down your thighs.
Bodies spent you collapse onto the counter, cool stone against your cheek. His body pressed against yours, it’s weirdly comforting to feel him against you. You feel his hands rub at your hips, as he kisses the back of your neck.
“Wasn’t sure you were capable of being sweet,” You tease, trying to catch your breath.
Lee eases up, slowly letting himself slide out of you. You grimace at the sting, just enough to remind you that you will be feeling this for the next several days.
“I am capable of a lot of things.” He kisses your shoulder and moves over to the kitchen. You can’t move yet, your legs still shaking.
A warm towel hits your skin, and you flinch, Lee’s hand steadying you as he keeps cleaning you up. Once done, he tosses the towel into the sink before helping you get dressed. Once dressed he picks you up and puts you on the counter. Large hand cupping your chin, he leans in and kisses you.
You push back against him, arms wrapping around his neck as he slots himself between your legs. Tongues pushing against each other, exploring in a near gentle way.
“Happy New Year,” You murmur, which just makes him laugh his eyes crinkling in the corners.
“Happy New Year,” Lee says, kissing you back.

Author note: I fucking love this dirty bastard so much...
The heat clung to Arvin like a second skin, the late afternoon sun turning the school parking lot into a sweltering wasteland.
He stood next to his truck with a cigarette hanging from his lips, the brim of his cap casting a shadow over his eyes as he waited for Lenora—something he did every day, watching the doors of the school for her figure to appear.
His patience was wearing thin, the relentless humidity weighing on him, but he didn’t dare leave without her.
Not here. Not in this town.
His eyes scanned the yard, and that’s when he saw it: Lenora, standing off to the side, clutching her books like a shield.
She was surrounded by a trio of girls, their voices sharp and mean, cutting thick through the hot air.
Arvin could see the way she shrunk, trying to make herself smaller as their words slicing into her without mercy.
A surge of protectiveness flared—the same way he always did when someone threatened her,
He flicked his cigarette to the ground, stomping it out with a curse under his breath.
Just as he was about to intervene when you appeared, striding through the dust and heat with the kind of confidence that turned heads and stopped conversations.
You walked right into the middle of the scene unbothered by the sneers and whispers thrown your way.
“Didn’t think she’d need a slut to protect her,” the leader of the group spat, her posse snickering behind her.
You didn’t even flinch. Cool as ever, you reached into your pocket and pulled out a cigarette, lighting it with a effortless precision that had Arvin mesmerized.
“Slut, huh?” you echoed. There was something almost playful in your tone, like you were amused by her attempt to insult you. “Ain’t that what your boyfriend calls me when I see him?”
The girl’s sneer faltered, her eyes narrowing as she tried to hold her ground. “Wha...what’re you talkin’ about?”
"Your name’s Gina, right?" you asked, exhaling smoke into the humid air.
Gina stiffened, sensing the shift in conversation. "Yeah, why?"
You shrugged, flicking ash off your cigarette and giving her a once-over that made her bristle. "Just something your boyfriend mentioned."
Gina blinked, her face twitching with confusion. "And what the hell's that supposed to mean?!"
"You know you're cuter than I expected," ignoring her question you blew smoke into her face, making her take a step back. "Then again, don’t remember much he said when his face was buried between my legs."
The other girls gasped as the color drained from Gina’s face. She opened her mouth, but she struggled to find the words in a sputtering rage.
Arvin, caught between surprise and amusement, couldn’t stop the choked chuckle that escaped his throat.
His sudden sound made everyone turn, including you.
Your eyes landed on Arvin, still smirking as if you’d known he was watching the whole time.
Gina, humiliated and seething, took the chance to storm off with her friends trailing behind her.
"You...you disgusting WHORE!" she screeched over her shoulder, her voice cracking in anger.
You didn’t miss a beat. “Funny, that’s not what your boyfriend was saying,” you called after her, your voice dripping with mock sweetness. “Ate me up quicker than a sundae in July!”
Arvin shook his head in disbelief as the trio disappeared from sight, trying (and failing) to suppress his grin.
He glanced back toward you and Lenora, who was still clutching her books like a lifeline, her face flushed with embarrassment.
“You didn’t have to do that,” Lenora murmured, her voice soft, full of gratitude but laced with worry. “People already—"
"—talk about me?" you cut in with a shrug, flicking the cigarette butt to the ground and crushing it beneath your boot.
“Don't worry 'bout it Bible Thumper.” Your tone was playful, the nickname clearly something affectionate between you and her.
You lift your chin, gesturing toward Arvin’s truck. "Looks like your ride’s here."
Lenora gave you a small smile, casting a final glance at the ground as she shuffled over to the truck.
Arvin hadn’t moved though. He was still standing there, watching you.
You were dressed in a tight, low-cut top and a short skirt that hugged your curves—clothing considered vulgar by small-town southern standards, especially for 1965.
The bright red bandana you had tied in your hair made you look even more rebellious, standing out like a beacon among the pastel dresses and modest cardigans the other girls wore.
Then there was the fact your brown skin was a rarity in Knockemstiff, Ohio. The town wasn’t overtly racist, but had an undercurrent of prejudice was always lingering like smoke in the air.
You raise an eyebrow at him, catching him staring. "Got a problem with your vision church boy?"
Arvin flushed, realizing he’d been caught.
"No, uh... no problem," he muttered, fumbling with the brim of his cap before awkwardly tipping it in your direction and stumbling back toward the truck.
Lenora was already in the passenger seat, her wide eyes watching the exchange with mild curiosity.
He shot you a final glance before getting behind the wheel, hands gripping the steering wheel tighter than necessary.
As the truck rumbled to life Arvin couldn’t help but steal one last look at you in the rearview mirror.
You were leaning against the side of the building with another lit cigarette, your form growing smaller as the truck rolled away.
The road stretched out in front of him but his mind lingered behind.
It wasn’t until a few miles down the road did Arvin work up the nerve to ask, “That girl...back there. She, uh...you know her?”
Lenora didn’t look up, instead trained on the frayed strap of her bag that she was nervously fidgeting with.
“Her name’s ____,” she said, her voice soft with fondness. “She’s been helpin’ me. You know, with the girls at school.”
Arvin frowned, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. “Helpin’ you? Didn’t seem like the kind of person who—”
Lenora snapped her head towards him, eyes fierce. “You don’t know her, Arvin.”
“She’s good!” She continued, more certain, like she needed to make it clear before he could form any more judgments. “She’s not what people think.”
Arvin raised an eyebrow, giving Lenora a sidelong glance. He wanted to believe her, but it didn’t add up—not with what he’d heard, not with what he’d seen of you.
“Doesn’t even come to church,” he tries.
Lenora shrug, facing the window. “Doesn’t make her bad Arvin. Jesus loved Mary Magdalene, didn’t he?”
The statement hit him harder than he expected. He wasn’t sure why, but the comparison lingered.
Lenora, despite being the town’s purest soul, seemed to see something in you that no one else did.
“Mary Magdalene,” he muttered, as if testing the words on his tongue.
“Mary was a sinner, wasn’t she? A woman with a reputation. Jesus showed her love and forgiveness. He saw her for who she really was, not what people thought of her.” She paused, her eyes back on her lap. “I think ____ is a lot like that.”
Arvin fell silent. He had grown up hearing stories of redemption, how Jesus saw past sins to the heart beneath.
It was one thing to hear those stories in church—to recite scripture and praise, but to apply it to someone like you? Could it be that simple?
He thought about the way you had stood in that parking lot and how you defended Lenora without hesitation.
You did cared about the insults thrown. You didn't falter when they spat the word slut in your face.
Then there was Lenora, tucked behind you, her wide-eyed innocence protected by someone the town swore was trouble.
Arvin didn’t know what to think. Part of him—the part raised under his grandmother’s strict moral code—wanted to reject it, to cling to the safety of what he’d always been taught.
People like you with a reputation weren’t to be trusted. They were trouble. They’d drag you into the dirt with them if you weren’t careful.
But another part of him couldn’t stop thinking about you.
The way you had looked at him, with that teasing smile like you knew something he didn’t. Like you weren’t afraid of him, or the town, or anything.
There was something so free about you, so untouchable...and it was dangerous.
It stirred something deep in him, something that had nothing to do with right or wrong.
“I don’t know,” he muttered finally, more to himself than to Lenora. “Just seems like the kind of person you shouldn’t be hangin’ around with.”
Lenora’s head snapped up at that. “I mean what would Grandma Emma say?” he added quickly, trying to justify his hesitation.
He didn’t want to sound like he was being overprotective, but the thought of Lenora getting caught up in your world—it didn’t sit right.
“She knows,” Lenora said, her voice surprisingly firm. “She doesn’t like it, but... she lets me. Because she knows that ____ is kind. She helped me, Arvin. No one else stood up for me the way she did.”
Now that stopped him cold.
If Grandma Emma with all her devoutness and strict adherence to Christian values could allow Lenora to be around you, then maybe...maybe there was more to you than what he thought.
Arvin glanced at Lenora then back at the road. The thought gnawed at him, your image lingering in the back of his mind like a half-formed idea he couldn’t quite grasp.
He was caught between two worlds—his grandmother’s moral code and the inexplicable draw you had over him.
Temptation, that’s what it was. Plain and simple.
It didn’t feel simple. It felt heavy, he wasn’t used to feeling that pull,
But maybe Lenora was right. Maybe, just like Mary Magdalene, you were more than what people said.
Maybe he’d been too quick to judge.
The drive home was quieter than usual, each of them lost in their own thoughts.
The weeks that followed your encounter with Arvin in the parking lot slipped by slowly, each day dragging with the heavy heat of summer.
You had begun to linger in his thoughts, creeping into his mind in the quiet moments when he least expected it.
He noticed you more now. At first, it was accidental—a glance here or there when he’d pick up Lenora from school or drive through town.
Sometimes you’d offer him a nod, a faint smirk playing at the corner of your lips as if you knew exactly what you were doing to him.
You didn’t go to church, not like the rest of them.
Every Sunday without fail he'd catch you: leaning casually against the brick wall near the chapel as you waited for service to end.
It was one Sunday, Arvin stood with Lenora under the oak tree by the steps, half-listening to her talk about something from the sermon.
His eyes drifted across the street, scanning the quiet neighborhood out of habit—and there you were.
The sun caught the edge of your dress, and for a second, you looked like something out of place. Not of this town, not of its rules or restrictions.
Like you were from another world entirely.
Without thinking, his gaze lingered too long, and you caught him. Your eyes locked onto his, and for a split second, Arvin felt that strange tightening in his chest.
Embarrassment crawled up his throat, but you didn’t look away. Instead you smiled—the corners of your lips curling up as if you’d expected him to be watching.
He swallowed hard, quickly glancing back to Lenora who was still talking, completely unaware of the silent exchange.
He tried to brush it off—told himself it didn’t mean anything. But the feeling of being seen by you, noticed in that way, was something new.
The feeling stayed with him long after you were gone.
In the weeks that followed he caught himself looking for you more often. He’d spot you from a distance, sometimes walking by the side of the road as he drove by in his truck.
Your posture was always casual, unbothered. Your dress would sway with your movements, your hips rolling in a way that defied everything about this small, stifling town.
There was nothing modest or demure about you, and Arvin couldn’t stop looking.
And whenever you catch him staring, that same smirk tugged at your lips before you’d nod in acknowledgment.
At night, when the house was quiet and everyone was long asleep, Arvin would lie awake, your image burning in his mind.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. He wasn’t supposed to think about you.
His grandmother’s sermons about temptation played on a loop in his head, warnings about sin and damnation ringing out in her voice.
But you weren’t just a temptation; you were kind to Lenora, protective even. Arvin had seen it, the way you stood by her side without expecting anything in return.
People called you all kinds of names, painted you as something to be avoided, but none of that matched the way you were with her. It didn’t make sense.
As for Lenora, she spoke more often of you now. She adores you—admire even. That always struck Arvin as odd.
There were days when Lenora would beg you to join her in the woods, sitting under the trees while she read aloud from her Bible.
You were nothing like the type of person he imagined Lenora would fall in line with, but then again, Lenora was far more forgiving than anyone in Knockemstiff.
She defended you like she had something to prove, telling him how you’d been helping her and that people didn’t know the real you.
The afternoon sun was beginning to sink lower in the sky as you and Lenora walked toward the Russell home.
You’d just finished leaving the woods, her familiar chatter filling the silence between you.
Lenora (ever the sweetheart), had invited you in, mentioning that it was Arvin’s birthday and they were planning a small dinner to celebrate.
Knowing the town’s judgment followed you wherever you went, especially in public spaces like the Russell home, you turn it down.
It wasn't until you saw Lenora’s broken expression did you hesitate. Before you knew it, you were walking up the steps with her.
You didn't plan on staying long, just until dinner started.
The idea of sitting down for a family meal, especially at the Russell home, wasn’t exactly something you were comfortable with.
As soon as you stepped inside, the scent of warm bread and mixing chatter of the Russell family greeted you.
Grandma Emma was in the kitchen, her back straight as she prepared dinner. She gave you a brief, suspicious glance when you entered with Lenora.
Earskell seemed to take an immediate liking to you. He was lounging in his chair by the living room window with a grin spread across his face, looking entirely too relaxed.
Arvin stood near the doorway. His hands were shoved deep in his pockets, clearly caught off guard by your presence.
For a moment, the room froze. Your eyes met his and the tension was immediate.
You hadn’t been this close to him since that day at the school, and it was clear he hadn’t expected you here—certainly not for something as intimate as a family dinner.
His gaze flickered over you. It was more modest than usual, a subtle nod to Emma’s old-fashioned ways.
With a black knee-length skirt, your light-colored blouse clung to your shoulders, the neckline dipping low enough to be daring in this town.
Arvin’s eyes traced the curve of your collarbone, his throat tightening at the sight.
“Didn’t expect to see you here,” Arvin muttered, low voice barely hiding the nervous tint beneath it.
You gave him a slow teasing smile, your eyes glinting with amusement as you stepped forward.
“Didn’t expect to be here either. Hope ya don't mind birthday boy,” you replied, the words rolling off your tongue with a soft lilt that made Arvin shift on his feet.
Earskell watched with a grin, clearly enjoying every second of the interaction.
Blissfully unaware of the tension swirling around the room, Leanora hurried back to the kitchen when Grandma Emma called for her, leaving you and Earskell alone with Arvin.
“Well, well, well. If it ain't miss ____." Earskell drawled, his voice carrying a hint of Southern charm laced with mischief. “Didn’t think we’d have such fine company tonight. Sure do brighten up the place.”
You grinned at that, makin your way to sit on the couch next to his chair, arms casually crossed. “You flatterin’ me old man?”
Earskell barked a laugh, eyes twinkling. “Just callin’ it like I see it. Ain’t often we get someone who can keep up with me.”
“You ain’t wrong about that,” you shot back, your voice low and teasing, the crassness in your tone catching Lenora by surprise as she returned from the kitchen. “Though I’m not sure your nephew here knows what to make of it.”
Arvin tensed visibly, his ears burning red at the way the conversation seemed to be shifting toward him.
He stayed quiet most of the time, barely able to meet your gaze. And now, with his uncle egging you on, he felt like a rabbit caught in a trap.
“Boy’s always been a quiet one,” Earskell said, waving a hand dismissively. “But I reckon he’ll come around, especially with someone like you lightin’ up the room.”
Arvin shot his uncle a sharp look, his face flushing even deeper. “Earskell,” he muttered, warning in his tone.
“Ain’t no need to be shy, boy,” he teased, leaning in as if sharing a secret. “Not every day a pretty girl walks through that door, is it?”
You couldn’t help but chuckle, giving Arvin a sideways glance, watching him squirm. He was trying so hard to keep his cool, but the flush on his neck and the way his hands fidgeted gave him away.
“Don’t worry, I won’t bite,” you say to him before giving a flutter of your lashes. “Unless you ask.”
Arvin’s throat bobbed as he swallowed, the tension in the room thickening for just a moment.
He couldn’t bring himself to respond, instead opting to drop into his chair at the far end of the couch, avoiding your gaze entirely.
The older man didn’t miss a beat, clearly delighted by your banter.
“Now don’t go thinkin’ you can outtalk me, girl,” Earskell said, leaning forward in his chair with a grin. “I’ve got years of experience on ya.”
“I ain’t scared of a little experience,” you replied with a smirk, flicking your eyes over to Arvin long enough to catch him glancing away.
He was practically squirming now, clearly unsure of how to handle the banter and the easy way you seemed to command the room despite barely trying.
You stood after a while, brushing your hands off on your dress and glancing toward the kitchen. “I should get goin’ before dinner’s on. Don’t want to overstay my welcome.”
Earskell laughed, waving a hand. “You’re always welcome here, girl. Don’t let these sour faces fool ya.”
Grandma Emma emerged from the kitchen just in time, wiping her hands on a towel and nodding toward you. “You’re welcome back anytime.”
You gave her a nod, offering a respectful smile despite the subtle weight of judgment that always seemed to hang around Emma.
She wasn’t cruel, not like the others in town, but she was set in her ways—rigid in her moral code.
You appreciated her decency, even if it was accompanied by a thin veil of disapproval.
Earskell leaned back in his chair, grinning as he turned toward Arvin to nudge him. “Why don’t you walk her out boy? Least you can do, seein’ as how she graced us with her presence.”
Arvin flushed at the suggestion, his hands immediately coming out of his pockets as he looked between you and his uncle.
“Uh... sure,” he muttered, the nervousness thick in his voice.
He rose from his seat and awkwardly motion for you to follow him to the door. The walk was short, but every step seemed to stretch out painfully for Arvin.
He could feel your presence next to him, the faint scent of cigarette smoke and wildflowers clinging to the air.
It was intoxicating, and he cursed the way his skin tingled when your arm brushed lightly against his.
At the door, you turned to face him, your expression softening just a little.
The usual teasing glint in your eyes was still there, but something else had crept—something more intimate, more dangerous.
“Happy birthday,” you say quietly, your voice softer now, as if you didn’t want the rest of the house to hear.
Before he could respond you reach into your bag and pull out a small card, pressing it into his hand.
Your fingers brushed his as you passed it over, the contact sending a jolt through his body.
He stared down at the card, blinking as his mind scrambled to catch up. “What’s this?”
“Just a little somethin’ for later,” you murmured, your eyes locking with his for a heartbeat too long. “Don’t forget to read it.”
Giving him one last smile, you turn and walk out into the fading evening light.
Arvin stood frozen at the door, watching as you disappeared down the dirt road. He could still feel the ghost of your touch on his skin, the weight of the card heavy in his hand.
His heart was pounding, the familiar pull of temptation gnawing at the edges of his resolve.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he glanced down at the card.
His name was written across the front in your neat handwriting. And when he flipped it over, his breath caught in his throat:
Meet me at the abandoned barn by the cornfield.
His mind raced, the invitation clear—undeniable. His heart thudded in his chest, and a small voice in the back of his mind reminded him of all the reasons he shouldn’t go.
All the reasons this was dangerous, reckless. His fingers tightened around the card, and for a brief moment he wondered what the hell he was doing.
But he knew, deep down, that he’d be there.
.*.·:·.☽✧✧☾.·:·.*
The moon hung high in the night sky, casting a silver-blue glow over the fields.
Arvin could hear the sound of his own heartbeat echoing in his ears as he made his way down the narrow dirt path toward the barn, the folded card tucked tightly into his jacket pocket.
He’d read it at least a dozen times since you handed it to him, each glance sparking a new wave of heat that crawled up his spine.
He should’ve stayed home. He knew that. He’d spent the last few hours after dinner sitting on the porch, wrestling with himself.
When he reached the barn door he stopped just outside.
His grandmother’s warnings about temptation played on repeat in his mind, endless sermons about purity and righteousness and the consequences that came to those who strayed.
It wasn’t just her voice he heard; it was the town’s, too—the collective judgment of the people he’d known his whole life.
They wouldn’t hesitate to condemn him, to call him a fool for even thinking about following you here.
Because no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t stop thinking about you
The way you’d looked at him when you handed him the card, the softness in your voice when you wished him a happy birthday.
The memory of it made his heart race and he hated how much he wanted more of that feeling. More of you.
His fingers nervously twitched at his sides as he took a breath, steeling himself before finally stepping inside.

The bell above the door tinkled and you walked from the back to the front counter drying your hands on a clean rag. The donut shop was just barely getting busy for the morning.
"Good morning, how can I - oh. What are you doing here? The sun is up," you teased the man who walked in. You didn't hide the way you looked him up and down in his uniform.
Lee smirked but couldn't return the favor of eyeing you up thanks to the counter in front of you. "Mornin'. I'm on day shift now. I'm your nightmare now."
"Didn't realize I had been so good that the heavens decided to bless me," you said. "What can I get you, Lee?"
"Aside from a date on my next day off?"
"Cute, but unless you talk fast I'm kicking you out because my rush is starting," you told him, noting the cars pulling up in the parking lot.
"I'm serious. Let's go out. I'll buy." He looked over his shoulder. "But now I'll take a coffee and two glazed."
"Am I gonna see you every morning now?" You asked him, starting to get his order.
"Even on days you don't work if you want," Lee said with a grin.
"Lee Bodecker, get out of here," you told him handing him the bag and cup and taking the money. You weren't offended in the least even if that comment was a bit crass. It had been months of flirting even though your schedules hadn't been very compatible. "You mean it though? A date?"
Lee nodded, "I do. Just give me the time and place and I'll be there. I'll be a gentleman, promise."
You didn't doubt him. Even though he let his mouth run, he had never made you feel uncomfortable.
