The Peaks of Impermanence: A Pilgrim’s Reflection on Mount Wutai
Completing the 75-kilometer pilgrimage across Mount Wutai over a single weekend is a grueling feat, especially for someone who hasn’t climbed a mountain in over a year. By the end of the second day of trekking, my body was pushed to its absolute limit, leaving me shivering with a fever for an hour. On the third day, every single step forward required a monumental effort. In those heavy, exhausting moments, the trek began to feel like a microcosm of life itself: a series of painful repetitions where purpose fades, leaving only the raw struggle to survive.
Yet, looking back, there was a profound grace in finishing the journey safely. Mount Wutai is revered as the bodhimanda—the seat of awakening—of Manjushri Bodhisattva, the embodiment of wisdom. Spiritual tradition holds that every pilgrim who walks these peaks will encounter Manjushri in some form, and that their deepest wishes will be fulfilled.
For me, this has always held a literal truth. After my very first pilgrimage here years ago, my life transformed: I met the girl who would become my partner, and I discovered a newfound passion for songwriting. The mountain gave me hope.
This recent journey, however, offered a different, quieter kind of wisdom. Due to recent closures, many of the temples were inaccessible, and the historical relics that had deeply moved me in the past were hidden from view. Many of the temporary stalls along the path were also closed, casting a stark, quiet atmosphere over the peaks. At first, it felt isolating and restrictive, but it soon became a vivid manifestation of Anicca—the Buddhist concept of impermanence. Nothing stays the same; environments shift, comforts vanish, and expectations are upended.
Yet, even within these restrictions, the mountain revealed that sacred magic is never truly locked away; it simply changes its form.
While wandering through one of the temples, I came across a soot-stained corner piled high with coal. There, resting quietly in the dust, was a massive dog that looked remarkably like a lion—the locals told me it was a Tibetan Mastiff. In Buddhist iconography, Manjushri rides upon a fierce lion (Suanni). Seeing this magnificent, lion-like creature in such an ordinary, gritty corner felt like a small miracle. I turned to the older lady trekking with me and whispered, "Just imagine Manjushri Bodhisattva sitting right there on its back."
The mountain was reminding me that while things change, a way forward always appears, and blessings arrive in the most unexpected ways. As I finally approached the North Peak, exhausted and depleted, a gust of wind caught a tiny red line and tangled it gently around my body. It was a subtle, beautiful sign dancing in the wind—a quiet blessing hinting at new, auspicious connections and fresh beginnings.
Moments later, when my blood sugar crashed dangerously low, I miraculously received two mooncakes, a vital lifeline exactly when I needed it most. To close the circle, because it was the 15th day of the lunar month, I found myself stepping into a small, intimate Dharma assembly at the Yanjiao Temple on the Middle Peak. Having visited this temple twice before, standing there amidst the chanting felt like coming home.
The total pilgrimage is a brutal reminder of suffering, but it is equally a testament to resilience. It taught me that even when the path is stripped of its usual comforts and the body wants to quit, you can always find the strength to navigate the emptiness. You can always find your way out.
