Just watched Cruella (2021) for the first time and my brain rot is intense rn.
BIG fan of this genre of live-action movies that are recontextualizing the villains we grew up with (Joker 2019 im looking at you). PLEASE recommend more titles like these because i am hungry for them
Humanizing the villains??! Like really, truly recasting them under the light of humanity?!??!! In the cases of cruella and joker, they are both still morally condemnable, but understandably so. These adaptations of the previously cartoonishly-evil characters did such a wonderful, MASTERFUL job at developing unique, compelling, and complex backstories that genuinely make a HUMAN out of them! Where the lesson that is jumping out at the viewer the entire time is “surprise! Now you must reimagine this villainous trope through the lenses of nusnce and empathy!” And I think these two examples have been MASTERPIECES.
And fuckk what creativity and intellect the screenwriters demonstrate. To take the PERFECT EXPLANATORY ROUTE THAT IS MENTAL ILLNESS for these characters. THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO REPRESENT COMPLEX MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES IN MEDIA. Joker with his pseudobulbar affect (inappropriate, “nervous” laughter due to trauma) and in my opinion being extremely autistic coded, Cruella being the most bpd coded character ever (also explicitly tied back to her traumatic childhood!). Man just, i hope the people that worked on these movies received all the flowers they deserve and more because WHAT MASTERPIECES such powerful stories and characterizations. I could go on about this for days.
And do NOT get me started on the FASHION AND ARTISTRY OF CRUELLA DONT DO IT
