Devon Loch Mix for International Tapes
From the Artist:
Devon Loch is the musical alter-ego of writer and musician Richard Greenan. When he's not making drowsy-dissonant organ lullabies, Richard runs the record label and arts collective Kit Records, while presenting a show on London's NTS Radio.
This mix is a collection of songs I found inspiring during the making and release of my recent record, Sleep Scale. For some reason I'm really into floaty, aquatic noises and synthetic voices at the moment. The firework sounds like a starting pistol to Shostakovich's crazy horse race. It also features a bunch of unreleased tracks from the Kit Records crew (Swim, TNH, Cara & Antilöch). Bach is definitely spinning in his grave.
Tracklist:
Jonathan Richman - When I'm Walking
Aardvarck - Stayput
Mica Levi - Bothy
Gavin Prior - Little Laurie
Swim Platførm - HVAL FALL 2
Disasterpeace - Puzzle
Tomáš Dvorák - The Glasshouse With Butterfly
HOLOVR - Line of Flight (part 1)
The Nag's Head - Luxury Slime Vortex
Bach - Puer Natus in Bethlehem
African Head Charge - Stebeni's Theme
Shostakovich - Prelude No. 2 (with fireworks)
Frank and his Sisters - Mwanangu Lala
Damascvs - Sogan-Brashni
Cara Stacey - Sunbird
Antilöch - untitled
Devon Loch ~ Sleep Scale
Devon Loch ~ Sleep Scale
Devon Loch‘s Sleep Scale is a mini-album that can, perhaps, be described as a minimal ambient work, in the sense that it bares sounds and structure down to very basic forms while providing an invitation to become lost in the layering. The simplicity of the various sound experiments going on, as well as the sweet melodic sections, reveal the endeavor to be focused not so much on process but on…

Hi there, just wanted to say first that I love your blog. You're so passionate and I love reading your commentary. Now, I know you're more of a flat racing kind of person than steeplechase, but just for curiosity's sake perhaps you could tell me a bit about Devon Loch? I think he was most known for his "flop" in the 1956 Grand National. But other than his accident, I can't seem to find much about him! Did he ever recover after that?
Hey thanks anon! It's always good to hear feedback <3
Oh, Devon Loch, the most famous "Horse That Totally Did The Splits Instead Of Winning The Grand National" ever!
...ouchie...
Anyways! He was a gelding born in 1946, sired by Devonian, and out of Coolaleen. Owned and raced by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother
Basically, he was a good but not-too-great horse who was given immense help in the Grand National when the favorite for the race, Must, fell early on. Going down to the wire, he was an easy five-length leader when he suddenly gave an odd half-leap and landed as you see above, spread-eagle on the track
Now, as to why he did that...there are various theories. Some think that he suddenly got a cramp in his hind end, while others think that he got confused by seeing a shadow and thinking that there was another jump
He did recover, in that he survived the incident. Devon Loch actually died in the winter of 1963, six years after his Grand National flop. In fact, he recovered so quickly from the incident that he was able to get up seconds later and walk off the track without help
There's not much on a further racing career after that incident, though, sorry
Bonus! Devon Loch with the jockey that had ridden him that day, future novelist Dick Francis
