Lecture 4: Elvis Presley performs “That’s All Right” and “Blue Moon of Kentucky” live on the popular variety show Louisiana Hayride on October 16, 1954. Elvis first recorded the songs on the Sun label on the July 5, 1954 recording sessions. Originally written by African-American bluesman Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup (and recorded by Crudup in 1946), Elvis’s version of “That’s All Right” was released July 19, 1954, and immediately sold tens of thousands copies. Word of mouth among teenagers was that Elvis was a singer like nobody else. The single also enjoyed lots of airplay on Dewey Phillips’ (no relation to Sam) R&B show on the Memphis radio station WHBQ. It was one of the early hits that helped catapult him to the heights of fame, lifting him from a popular regional act to something much bigger.

On Elvis' original "That's All Right" acetate (cut at Sun Records on 1954) Graceland revealed to have found, after all these years, during his 89th birthday celebration on January 8th, 2024 📀⚡✨

I literally cried listening to the original sound on that acetate while they were playing it at Graceland. I wanted to be there at Graceland that very moment.

I believe much more gems are out there yet to be found. Rarities, from pictures to footage, records and tapes, to memorabilia and - who knows - even personal itens that once belonged to him. I believe we can wait for more happy surprises.

My wish is for the next one to be Bill Randle's footage "The Pied Piper of Cleveland: A Day in the Life of a Famous Disc Jockey", finally being officially released. ⚡

Don’t usually do this, but since this show has Chad in it I’m gonna promote it. Y'all need to go watch Sun Records. Chad is one of the main characters and it is so damn good.
