I keep thinking about Booker and Elizabeth going through Columbia over the days/weeks they knew each other. I especially keep thinking about Booker telling Elizabeth that she needs to sleep and she refuses so vehemently. She keeps telling him she's not tired, that she's fine, that she can keep going. But Booker isn't an idiot and he has her pick locks to places that have no importance or merit. When she asks why he made her pick the lock, he tells her the truth. He promises to keep watch while she gets a couple hours.
She only agrees to sleep if he'll stay at her side. This is how they end up cuddling and sleeping together. I don't mean sex, I just mean Booker holding Elizabeth close to him, his hand still halfway through her hair as they snooze together in some small tucked away room in an abandoned house.
Eventually, they sleep in a bed together. Whether it's from boldness or exhaustion, neither can say, but Booker wraps an arm around her and holds her to him. They both ignore the rising warmth in the pits of their tummies and fall asleep quite content with the other's company.
Booker wakes at any noise or possible sign of danger, his grip around Elizabeth tighter than before as he lifts his head and looks around. Floating cities groan and yawn, settling like old houses in the middle of the night. It doesn't take long for him to be able to discern what is making which noise.
After Columbia, Booker takes the time to watch Elizabeth sleep. They're comfortable in their Parisian flat and he watches with relief as she finds peace in her slumber. However, old habits die hard and Booker is always waiting for trouble, for the other shoe to drop, for something to take her away from him again. He stays up late into the night just to make sure all is well. It usually takes Elizabeth muttering, "Go to sleep, Booker," for him to actually comply.
He’ll tuck in next to her, hold her flush against him, and feel the rhythm of her heart against his chest. Only then, only when he knows she’s safe and real, does he let sleep completely take him. When it does, he wakes for nothing, save her voice. It’s often late into the morning and she’s been watching him snore and drool for the better part of an hour. she already has coffee made and the day planned, but that doesn’t stop him from trying to stay asleep.
