jemma was born into high expectations. her parents worked hard to get to where they are now-- both doctors -- and they expected the same from their children. jemma’s older sister, jade, was already excelling in school, with plans of going into law. and jemma? well... she liked running around the living room pretending to be indiana jones, or waving a plastic sword around like westley in princess bride. different strokes for different folks, right?
she wasn’t necessarily bad at academics. she had good enough grades, but horrible conduct. she couldn’t help it, though! she always struggled to focus in school, and her teachers were kind of mean, and school was just BORING. jemma wanted adventure! she wanted to do something more fun than just sit in a classroom for a few hours a day and read and write, and-- she’s falling asleep just thinking about it.
instead of college, she went straight to work, finding odd jobs here and there, trying to find a way to make her childhood adventuring dreams come true, much to her parents’ dismay. which is fine! ha! who cares if she was the family disappointment? not her! it doesn’t bother her at all, really! it wasn’t awkward at family reunions! ahem, anyway--
for most of her early twenties, she had a shabby little apartment in (insert city here) and would travel around often in her dingy car, visiting different places, meeting new people where she could, and just exploring what little she could of the world. through the many odd jobs she worked, there was one that she stayed in for a prolonged amount of time because it fucking ROCKED-- she worked at a medieval-themed dinner theater (literally just imagine the medieval times restaurants), and it was the best! she got to be a knight as a job and have pretend fights, and have the crowd cheer for her. sure, sometimes they made her play the princess, but still, she rocked those dresses, so it was worth it.
it’s in that job that one of her co-workers tells her about the adventurer’s guild in stardew valley-- i’m sorry, what? sign jemma the FUCK up! THIS is what she’s been waiting for! so she packs her bag, uses most of what little savings she has (and her sister begrudgingly lends her some money, thx sis :* ) to move into a little cottage at the beach, gets a job at the fishing shop and a night stint at the saloon, proves herself to the guild, and she is on her way to being the best adventurer this goddamn town has ever seen! watch out!
