Gat balanced the shotgun over his shoulder, surveying the damage.

The Carnales had hit hard, but the Saints had put up a good fight before he and his crew got there.  He was still counting more red than purple.

“Hey, who’d we lose?” Dex called.

“Not as many as they did.”

Poking around, the Saints still on their feet took a roster of the fallen, calling back and forth.  One of the bodies crumpled against a collapsed column shuddered, and Gat blinked.

The body under that one was still alive.

Setting his weapon aside against the wall, he hefted the kid off the ground and set him on his feet.  He didn’t look worse for wear, except that rabbit in the headlights look he got sometimes after a fight, and Gat brushed him off absently.

“Found Malaki,” he called.

The roster was growing thin. Gat glanced back across the Church.

“Yo, anyone seen Mendoza?”

Still shivering, Malaki made the barest movement of his head.  Gat’s gaze was drawn to him, then to the corpse at their feet.  He nudged it with the toe of his boot.

“Shit, that’s him, ain’t it.”

“Sorry, kid,” he drawled, giving Malaki a conciliatory pat on the shoulder before moving on, “I know you two were tight.”

Losing people was almost too easy these days.
