Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
Celebrate Black History Month! Public Figure Profile: Coretta Scott King
Born: April 27th,1927 Died: January 30th, 2006 Coretta Scott King was a bright and determined young girl. Early on she was known for her talent as a violinist and a singer as well as a passionate civil right’s activist. She graduated as Valedictorian of her high school. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree in music and education at Antioch College in Ohio. She was given a fellowship to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where she would meet Martin Luther King Jr. After earning her second collegiate degree in violin and singing, Martin and Coretta were married. The lovely couple had 4 children (Yolanda Denise,Martin Luther King III,Dexter Scott, and Bernice Albertine.) Coretta participated in Martin’s Civil Right’s Work, giving speeches, concerts, marching and more. After his assassination in 1968 she continued to fight for equal rights, quoted as saying, “Civil rights was my fight before I ever met Martin.” Coretta formed the Martin Luther King Jr. center for Nonviolent Social Change the same year he died. She also fought to establish Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a national holiday until President Reagan approved it in 1983. Coretta continued to fight for equal rights including the rights of migrant workers and people in the LGBT community. She passed away after complications from a stroke and heart attack at the age of, 78. Coretta and Martin;s graves are in the reflection pool at the King Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
It’s the infamous civil and animal rights activist and author + second son to Martin Luther King Jr. & Coretta Scott King himself; Dexter Scott King, it was supposed to be his birthday on January 30th and he would’ve turned 64 but unfortunately he passed away at 62 due to prostate cancer… and I’d like to say happy heavenly birthday to the advocate himself: Dexter King and I hope you and your dad, mom and sister, Yolanda in the skies my friend.
