De Havilland DH.100 Vampire TG/278 tested by Geoffrey de Havilland, Jr. in 1945.
This aircraft, modified and piloted by John Cunningham, broke the altitude record set by Italian pilot Colonel Mario Pezzi ten years earlier in a Caproni Ca.161 biplane (17,083 meters (56,047 feet)). The new Vampire’s record (18,119 meters (59,446 feet) was set on the 23rd of March 1948

The Vampire was retired in 1990 (Swiss Air Force)
