He/him, 19. Business major on a break from college. Likes pinning insects and using humor to cope.

Avery’s mom has cancer. Not only does that majorly suck, but also, turns out having cancer is expensive. Avery needs a way to make money. Fast. Enter a demon attack, Xanthe, and a brilliant idea.

Excerpt: It's a long couple hours before Mom joins Avery in the waiting room, back in her regular clothes with her purse slung over her shoulder. She insists he sit down while she schedules her next chemo session. He can't make out the words exchanged between her and the clerk, but her face pinches as she takes what can only be the bill.

Yet another thing she won't accept Avery's help with.

Avery grabs his phone and pulls up his bank account, making a face at his meager savings. If he just had enough, maybe she wouldn't need to accept it. An anonymous donation, and she'd never know. He sinks down in his seat. He's probably not going to win the lottery any time soon, and the jobs he's juggling only make minimum wage. Maybe it's time to put on his Nigerian prince pants. Does capital "C" Cancer give you a pass for scamming the elderly?

Avery thinks of the DDI investigator from the other day and scowls. It's not like those guys aren't getting paid like heroes. How hard can it be to hunt demons, anyway? He and turtleneck guy basically did it by themselves—

Avery sits bolt upright.

Ding, goes the lightbulb over his head.

Title: Demon Hunters For Hire

Summary: In a world where demon attacks are frequent and unpredictable, the public relies on the Department of Demonic Investigation to protect them. Xanthe was on track to become a demonic investigator and make his parents proud, until his mental health left the building and deposited him in a crisis center. Now he's a college dropout with thousands of dollars of debt and too much useless knowledge about demons.

Avery's mother is sick and he's put his business education on hold, juggling jobs to help pay for her treatment. After a surprise demon attack crosses his path with Xanthe's, they find they might make a good team. Maybe their city doesn't need the DDI—maybe it needs a pair of demon hunters for hire. The thing is? The DDI doesn’t agree.

Avery There are three ways to deal with demons. The first: brute force. They're living, killable things, with squishy parts and all that fun stuff. As Avery smashes the fire extinguisher over the writhing creature's head, it makes a wet crack. He thinks, that was easy. And, maybe the DDI will pay me bounty money, is that a thing? And, I can wave to Mom on TV.

Then it opens a jaw and a second smaller jaw inside, like some sort of nightmarish nesting doll, and hisses. Apparently unfazed by the brand new dent in its head. Avery loses his balance with the force of his swing and falls on his ass. The extinguisher clatters to the floor and rolls away.

Avery looks at the demon. It looks back. Prolonged eye contact. Maybe if he holds very, very still—scientifically inaccurate dinosaur rules or something—

It lunges.

Avery scrambles backward. His back hits the aisle three shelves and soup cans roll across the floor. He is about to be on TV for all the wrong reasons. Reasons like the teeth two seconds away from popping his eyeballs like fruit gushers. Sorry, Mom, about the funeral money.

The second and third ways? Yeah, he's not gonna live to tell you.

He/him, 18. College dropout/former aspiring DDI Investigator. Turtleneck devotee. Deeply repressed & deeply in debt. Days since last mental breakdown: 29.

Xanthe was the fourth child to an aging mother and father who were over and done with being parents by the time they had him. Disconnected from them and from his successful older siblings, he set out to college to someday make a name for himself in the DDI, and finally make his family proud. That was before his 30 day psychiatric inpatient stay and subsequent dropping out of school. Which no one in his family can ever find out about. Everything is fine.

Excerpt: The ATM might as well spit on Xanthe and call him pathetic. He calmly considers slamming his fist into the screen or shaking it like a vending machine. Maybe if he pries open the cash dispensing slot and reaches his arm inside . . .

Xanthe does not do that. He blinks at his abysmal balance, takes his card, and hurries away with his head down. He does not think about the crisis intervention center bill on the table or the student loans or the late rent notice. If he does he will lie on the floor in front of the ATM and not get up. It would be mildly distressing and inconvenient for the grocery store employees and customers.
