Plant of the Day
Wednesday 6 July 2022
The flowering houseplant nursery Dibleys put on a stunning display of Streptocarpus (Cape primrose) cultivars at the Royal Horticultural Society Hampton Court Flower Show. Plants need a light position but too much sun burns the leaves and fades the flowers.

(From earlier today.)
Dibleys really seems to like their starch packing peanuts! This was after I already bagged up enough of the things to reveal that inner box containing the actual plants.
(Nossir, not quite three bags full! But it did take another wastepaper basket liner to hold them all.)
Finally getting a chance to breathe some, and adjust to the warm house!
Yep, before I knew exactly when we could expect to be moving? I went ahead and ordered some more African violets and a couple of Cape Primrose plants from them. Not too surprisingly, they only started shipping out plant orders again for the year at the beginning of March.
I was bummed out about losing all but a couple of extremely tough houseplants, and the otherwise limited gardening ability/opportunities right now. Not only do I just really like gesneriads, getting a simple windowsill tray of fairly easy smallish plants going again seemed like an excellent way to go.
(And since I'd also lost what pots/suitable soil/etc. I already had, I decided to just go ahead and order some from them at the same time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Along with a "self-watering" capillary mat windowsill tray primarily for the violets. Which wasn't actually in the box with everything else, but I already sent them an e-mail asking about that. Their customer service has always been good, so hopefully that will get straightened out ASAP!)
What I ended up with, trying not to go absolutely wild with the order: One of their Saintpaulia collections--this one with 5 Russian/Ukrainian varieties of their choice, for a little something different.
Including a couple of miniature varieties, and one variegated leaf regular-sized one.
Still looking a little squished from transport there, but all the plants were indeed in excellent shape. Thanks to all that padding in the boxes! 😅
Also, I couldn't resist one "normal" compact-growing Cape Primrose variety, along with a species I had repeatedly been tempted to try before (on the left):
A small, free flowering species ideal for the smaller space. The habit is unusual for streptocarpus in that it produces small leaves along a trailing stem. Makes a beautiful hanging basket.
Yeah, these are all shipped out as still little baby plants, so it would take quite a while for that one to fill out a basket!
As usual, I am really looking forward to watching them grow out. If frustrated that I am now expecting to need to disturb them again just as they're hopefully nicely settled in and starting to take off, to play International Plant Smuggler in May! 😒
Not that I think anybody really gaf about a few houseplants/cuttings stashed in my suitcase, or at least they never have before. Including into/out of the US. Still seems like the best way to go.
Definitely not planning to leave what houseplants I still have totally behind, regardless! Never mind these new little babies I just brought into less stable circumstances than I really would have liked.
Letting those just rest and recover in their box until tomorrow, though. Under Slothmur's supervision. 😊
This one came by mail from England today. Plug plant from Dibleys nurseries. Begonia "Lucerna". #plant #plants #houseplant #houseplants #begonia #begonialucerna #dibleys #dibleysnurseries (her: Aarhus, Denmark) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz-f43hgtqT/?igshid=16v6jcthplk8c
