I was just going through my dad's pack of DiceCards, and looking at the rulebook. Oh man, the Dungeon Crawl looks really fun! I definitely want to play it some time.

Playing Favorites

What does it say about me that I don't have a favorite playing card? I was just filling out my Kickstarter backer survey for Dicecards, and besides a pair of decks, I also get an 8x6" print of one of the cards. "Please enter the card you would like here," it says, and I realize I don't have a preference.

The survey helpfully lists some common favorites: ten of hearts, black joker, ace of spades. None of those call out to me. It's not that I don't play cards or have preferences when playing games. I play pinochle, poker, hearts, pitch, etc. and I'm always jockeying to use the black meeples, the top hat, the white pieces, or Professor Plum. I just don't get excited about seeing the jack of clubs unless I need it for the game I'm currently playing.

But now I feel that I need a favorite, and not just a playing card. I'm suddenly compelled to decide and declare that the bishop is my favorite chess piece, the T-block is my favorite tetrad, and the five is my favorite side of a D6. (It makes an X, after all.)

I'm going to sidestep the issue for now by specifying that I want a card with the letter tile M—Dicecards are cool like that—but I'm certain I'll wake up some night in the future, sweating, my mind racing, thinking, "Is it the jack of diamonds? What about the seven of spades? WHICH ONE IS IT?"

Anyone else have a favorite card?

Here's another Kickstarter for you all to check out! This is a 54-card (standard poker plus two jokers) deck of cards that has a bunch of dice on every card. They're in the right proportions to serve as pretty much any kind of dice you want: all of the standard polyhedrals, Fudge dice, wargaming scatter/artillery dice, writer's dice, and a bunch of stuff that's really useful to DMs and roleplayers like random map (grid AND hex) directions, random world cities, random target indicators, et cetera.

I *want* them. Yes, it's a pack of cards. It's also a full set of common-polyhedral dice, a set of short straws, a whole bunch of specialist dice (including ones with unusual symbols or modified distributions), a set of poker chips, a letter-tile set, a randomised colour-chooser for dealing with those arguments when starting a board game, a dreidel, a set of Zener cards, a set of the runes of the Elder Futhark, a coin, a capital-city chooser (54 world capitals), and a set of black/white vote-balls. It's the penknife of randomisers.
