Apartment 314: Chapter 5

Day & Josten run their Private Investigation business out of their apartment and manage to make ends meet without touching Neil's family money. Some months are better than others, but the two of them have been content in their inner city apartment, running around and spying on people for money. Over the last seven years, they've built a life together and it's been good.

Then Andrew Minyard, a lawyer from out of town knocks on their door and presents them with a case that they can't refuse - not with the amount of money offered - or the familiar look in his eye.

Neil turned onto his side, peering across the gap to the shock of dark hair fanned out over white pillows. In the months they’d lived together, Neil had yet to catch a rare Kevin bad night. They existed, according to Andrew, and were more frequent when he first moved in.

Settling into a routine here had probably helped ease his bad nights. It was no secret that Kevin took comfort in his routines, a left over from the strict schedule of the Nest. He went to bed at the same time every night, and it took him less than a half hour to drop off into a sound sleep. He woke up bright and early every morning, no matter how much his body protested the sunshine.

Kevin’s steady breaths hitched, drawing Neil from his thoughts. Tension lined his face, replacing the restful youth that usually accompanied sleep. As if Neil’s thoughts of bad nights had caused it, Kevin jolted awake. Covers crinkled as he sat up, shoulders shaking with each near silent, shuttering breaths.

It was no wonder he’d never woken Neil with his nightmares. This quiet panic barely scratched the atmosphere of the still bedroom. Andrew slept lighter than Neil, and even he hadn’t stirred for this. If Kevin kept his panic this suppressed, he likely only woke Andrew when he gave up on staying in bed. Footsteps jostling their shared bunk always woke Andrew. Nights where Kevin could talk himself down, neither of them would ever know it happened.

The passing thought that this muffled panic was learned from years in the Nest had Neil sitting up. Cold air greeted his bare legs as he shimmied from his covers and he hovered at the edge of Kevin’s bed, not quite sure how to help — how not to make it worse.
