Nathaniel couldn’t help but scoff at the ridiculousness of it all. It was undeniably true, factual and evident that he was nothing more than an object. He was a chess piece, a pawn to Ichirou to utilise in whatever means he deemed necessary and do whatever he pleased.

Being born was a mistake that Nathaniel paid for every day of his life. He would always be a slave to the family, a servant bound by an inherited debt he’d never be able to repay. Until death knocked, Nathaniel would be the property of someone else. He belonged to Ichirou Moriyama and his family.

"I didn’t spend two years watching your back just for you to fuck off back to Riko,” Andrew argued.

Nathaniel couldn’t help but laugh in Andrew’s face. "God. Fuck no. I don't work for that obnoxious little prick. Quite frankly, he knows to stay out of my way, or I’ll fillet him like a fish and feed his insides to his uncle."

Andrew blinked at Nathaniel.

“You can’t say stuff like that,” Kevin hissed. “What if he overhears?”

Hi! I was wondering if you had recs or authors that portray a badass Neil? I enjoy healing Neil, but I'd love to read more badass, can defend himself, shoot anyone Neil because he is a trained survivor and I feel it's forgotten sometimes

Hmmm... I’m so behind on fics because of RL and just trying to get some writing done myself, but I’d say...

badacts always does a great job of showing badass Neil (and Andrew) as well as balancing out their darkness with a bit of the softness.

crazy_like_a does as well, especially with their Creatures We Find in a Forest fic, and has a Raven!Neil fic (which I read a couple of chapters then stopped because of starting my own).

(those two are pretty popular, though, so you may have read their works)

I quite like how puddlejumper99 portrays Neil (and Andrew) in their Out of the Ashes series - still a bit feral after all the years on the run and then... well, trying not to spoil anything.

Ah... dammit, there was one fic written for one of the writing challenges (a big bang or fic exchange?) where Andrew and Kevin were detectives and Neil was fae (mostly fae or something like that?) and he helped them with a case about some sort of drug, but I don’t seem to have it bookmarked. That was good and he was his usually annoying, bad-ass self.

Andrew didn’t reply. 

Whether he believed Nathaniel or not, he obviously no longer cared what happened. He simply raised two fingers to his head, shooting a half-assed salute before sauntering away to inspect his now slightly damaged car. Nathaniel couldn’t help but feel smug as he watched Andrew pull out of the parking lot, leaving the two raven rejects alone.

“Get in,” Nathaniel ordered, unlocking Jean’s car.

It wasn’t a Maserati, but it was close enough: black paint, four wheels. Nathaniel didn’t understand why a car needed to be anything more than that. As long as it functioned, it was more than enough.

Jean had called Nathaniel’s car a barely functioning heap of scrap before its untimely demise. Unfortunately, it had been caught in a devastating accident between a bullet and Nathaniel’s shoulder. Needless to say, no amount of scrubbing was going to remove the blood stains on the dashboard. What Jean didn’t know couldn’t hurt him.

“Kevin,” Nathaniel barked. “Tick-tock.”

If Kevin wasn’t pale before, he was now. All the colour had drained from his skin, leaving him pasty and sick-looking. He was quivering like an abused puppy, watching its master approach. 

It took one of Nathaniel’s smiles for him to get moving, sliding into the backseat of the car. His sneakers squeaked as he brushed them against the door. He kept his bag close to his chest as if it was a metaphorical crutch.

Nathaniel couldn’t help but grimace, slamming the door in Kevin’s face.

Nathan Wesninsky was dead, but his killer was smiling, and Andrew couldn't shake off the feeling that it wasn't the end of anything. The city thrived off crime, and the crime itself was so much bigger than a triple murder. So much more important in the bright white of the interrogation room.

The killer was smiling. Andrew sat into a chair across him.

Cameras stayed off.
