50 Shocking Facts about Diet & Exercise
So yesterday evening, this programme was aired on channel 5.
I recorded it because this sort of stuff interests me and I watched it today and the more and more I continued to watch it, the more frustrated I got.
My mum who came in half way through even said 'If you were unsure about starting exercise then you sure as hell ain't gonna do it now!'
For anyone who did not see it then basically what it was about was a countdown of 50 scary/horrible facts that are not always publisiced about diet and exercise.
Granted, there were some facts in there about different injury's you can get if you don't stretch properly or horrible things supermarkets put into our food etc, which are all genuine facts that people should know - but I felt they portrayed every single fact like this horrible thing is definitely going to happen to you if you do such and such or eat such and such. There was even one section near the end of the show that talked about how eating a very very small amount of calories (under 1000 a day) for a long period of time will increase you lifetime to over 100 years. I'm sorry but I really don't care if there is a lot of 'hard science' behind this, how were they ever allowed to put that in the programme? Did they not even consider that a person that has/had an eating disorder could be watching this and something like that could be incredibly triggering?? I know when I watched it, toxic thoughts I thought had gone away started springing up in my mind and I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one.
If I did not know what I do know of diet and exercise, then I would literally be terrified after watching this programme.
Of course one must be aware of some of the dangers and problems there can be with exercise and certain foods, but putting fear into people about all these dangers is definitely the wrong way to do it. I feel sorry for anyone who made a new years resolution to loose weight or get fit and then proceeded to watch that show.
