i have been seeing a lot of posts on my dash about people being disillusioned with tumblr rp [ I've seen more than three people today talking abt this, not counting everything else i have seen this week ] & it's been making me assess this as a hobby & what it means to me. I've been writing with others on the internet as long as i can remember & it is different than it was when i was younger in many ways, both good & bad. but there is still something so cathartic about working with other people creatively that i just can't get anywhere else. I'm a messy rp'er that is slow, inconsistent ooc & jumps back & forth between blogs every few months but that is how i have fun. this is a no-pressure zone, a hobby that shouldn't put extra weight on your shoulders. write how you have fun with who you have fun with!
a friend recently described tumblr rp as playing barbies on the internet & something about that phrasing fed my inner child like goats at the petting zoo. i have thought really often about how niche this hobby is? like i know it's not a rare one compared to others but if you get onto a bus full of people chances are you are the only one doing tumblr rp. which is something that kind of emphasizes to me that you get to build your own community. you don't have to sit across the aisle from someone who you don't want to.
you choose who you follow. you get to choose who you write with, interact with, and continue talking to long-term. it can be overwhelming at times & it is okay to take a step back! it's okay to be bored & do something new! this shit is for our own entertainment. we get to breathe life into concepts, characters & trade thoughts of them with others. i have friends that i have had for years from this hobby! friends i will never forget! friends that fill me with love & creativity & all the jazz. i hope to make more as i continue to do it.
i have just been seeing a lot of bits about how things have changed [ in a negative context ] & that's true. me, personally, it takes a bit of time for me to feel super comfortable with people. when i was writing on tumblr 5 years ago i wasn't like that. things have changed & that's okay. but bottom line is different doesn't mean bad. different people work together in different ways & sometimes it takes time to find the people who work for you. i hope everyone i see struggling with this feeling comes to a conclusion that works for them but remember, we're supposed to be having fun, whatever that means is up to you.
