I think I got started on this line of thought because I just got one of those ridiculous scam/spam comments on AO3. So here we go.

Writing is a journey. It's a walk you take with your readers. You may know the end - they don't. Maybe they'll guess before you get there, maybe they'll be surprised. But what brings joy to you as you walk together is how the readers react to the sights - the events of the story - along the way.

When there is no reaction, when the reader either plods along & says nothing, or when you're not even sure the reader is walking with you at all, then there is no joy, and eventually no purpose in the journey at all. So why bother taking it in the first place?

I don't think I'm walking with that many people. So should I keep bothering or should I just finish what I promised & stop there?

In the near future (hopefully within a week, hopefully not as much as a month, really hopefully not longer than that) I'm going to start reposting some of my old fanfics. Mostly the ones from old challenges. For the ones that are chaptered, what sort of posting schedule would you like to see?

Please remember at best I'll be fixing up the notes & formatting, not finishing them yet. These will all go on my AO3 account, specifically "Higuchimon -To Be Rewritten". I don't know if I'll be able to put up everything but I will put up what I can. When I have them all up, I'll make a list of what's there in case anyone wants to read an old unfinished story.

This is a passing thought I decided to ask about. For my fics I wrote for challenges, a large chunk of them had word or chapter restrictions. Some had both. Some I had to have a certain amount of dividers used. Some had to be written in a particular tense. Today's question is...

How many of those restrictions should the rewrites get rid of/go beyond?

Just a little reminder that I'm probably going to put into my pinned post: I'm going to delete a *lot* of my fics off Tumblr. I haven't yet made the final decision on when the cut off point is but for now, if it's before 2026, there's a good chance it's going. So exercise discretion on reblogging anything. It might not be there forever. Some I might repost but some I won't. I will announce when I've got it all settled. That will probably be in March when I'm on spring break & have a little more time.

Thank you. I'm glad people still want to reblog my work but with the changes I have in mind, I feel it's safer to wait.

I'm thinking about this as I sort out my AO3 & decided to ask for opinions. At what point should I post a rewrite as a new story on AO3 & at what point should I just put the rewritten/edited version in the original post?

There is a definite difference between edits & rewrites. Rewrites will be something like Reversal, where instead of a bunch of drabbles & such, I write between 40 & 200 fics with full plots & resolution. Or if I'm trying to change something from the original prompt, like "write in present tense", & I'm changing it to past tense. Or when I'm rewriting to use they/them pronouns for Yubel. Edits will be something like "I like this fic as is, I just want to get it out of the word count limit originally set for it", so I'm adding between 100-1,000 words.
