ok to go back quite a lot , haesoo was adopted when she was seven by a family from manchester who’d lost one of their own. from then she grew up as an only child.
it was a relatively average childhood at home. haesoo’s new family was very wealthy but she had trouble adjusting and acted out at school.
that lasted awhile. she had a tight knit group of friends that lasted until graduation but even with the unexceptional marks she got she was destined for a great school---money’s always gone a long way.
she was never opposed to going to gilchrest but to say she was excited was an exaggeration. she knew what she wanted to do , as the psychologist she saw as a child had a tremendous impact.
haesoo adapted well to life at gilchrest , embraced it fully. for once she worked hard to improve every aspect of her life and made friends better than the ones in high school , ones that actually saw her.
going through the gravediggers society initiation process seemed like ano-brainer , then. it felt so easy , until the night she was buried alive. it was terrifying , every second. it definitely did something to her brain , permanently , but in her own world she calls it enlightenment.
hae became even more invested in her life at gilchrest , now staying at the manor and discovering things about herself , the school , her friends. it was certainly , the peak of her life. even to this day.
graduating felt like the beginning of the undoing. she didn’t want to go.
she married a woman she met at gilchrest and they adopted a child together. hae’s career was flourishing. in london after graduation , she quickly became one of the top psychologists in her area.
but she got bored , began to neglect parenthood and being a wife. the marriage fell apart after almost fifteen years and their child , who was no longer a child , she’s been estranged from since high school graduation.
even with a successful career , money. nothing ever quite compared to the emotion she felt being buried alive on campus a decade and a half ago. haesoo , at the moment , has never felt more alone in her life. even unwanted in an orphanage for years as a child.
so she jumped on the opportunity to come back to gilchrest , craving the connection and thrill and worthiness the gravediggers society brought to her.

accepting an invitation to join the gravediggers was easy, but laying down in a coffin to be buried alive? that was harder and they laid there all night wondering if they had been the victim of the ultimate prank, before they were staring up at the faces of the others. and from there it wasn’t so bad, not really. the group had connections that even liz couldn’t fathom and with liz’s growing social media prescence, they were already thinking of ways to take advantage of that.
six months after graduation, liz launched a collection in collaboration with mac and sent out pr kits to every make up wearing member of the gravediggers with promises of more great things to come. and then they pulled through, sending everyone all of their newest releases from makeup to clothing to perfumes. plus they’re great at getting invites for the hot influencer parties and launch events if you just ask, known for showing up to events with a friend from college on their arm.

BACKGROUND.
born to wealthy investor for a father and an archaeologist for a mother. youngest of three and the best of all of them. augustus and serena, while brilliant in their own right, couldn’t compare to the sheer magnitude of seraphina’s genius. however, they’re more sociable and agreeable — palatable, really — whereas seraphina is quite content with just watching from afar
she has everything working for her to be well-known and well-liked among her peers, but seraphina’s an enigma at best, and when she doesn’t budge at the constant badgering at the lunch table, people got the hint. and so she suffered the silence as her only company.
this one girl in her class took a seat beside her one day, but she didn’t really speak. not for a few days. and then one day the girl asked if seraphina had a pencil sharpener she could borrow, and that was the start of it. easy, and not all at once. her name was iris.
the two girls were practically joined at the hip, always at each other’s homes often enough they earned an honorary seat at the dinner table. iris was very dear to seraphina, and as they grew older, she wondered if her feelings for iris was how everyone felt towards a friend.
while she was asking serena about it, they were overheard by their father. a v traditional man. had to give up a lot for his family to be where they are, and this — thing his daughter had managed to get caught up in, is an aberration. to violate the ideals he has held on as a structure for his success was a threat to his legacy. he whisks his youngest off to boarding school at the earliest chance.
of course, being the newest addition to the student body of institut le rosey is a big benefit to the institution. however, due to her ever-present vigilance, it becomes apparent to seraphina that the administration pays a particular attention reserved only for her. ah. her father must have made a considerable donation to the schools funds for her to have spies tailing her every move. something about protecting the legacy, seraphina guesses. fine, she figures.
she throws herself in a multitude of extracurriculars to fill up the spaces in her mind. turn herself into something of value. archery, aikido, fencing, even becoming an equestrian just to cover up whatever “flaw” her father thinks she has. but it’s still all he sees.
there’s an anger that grows in her like a seed. and what comfort could a mother offer leagues away in a dig site, covered by sediment and dust? facetiming with her siblings is a monitored affair, and she stops calling them after a while. it didn’t seem right for an instructor to be breathing down her neck while she asks augustus how dinner was.
so, seraphina turned her genius into a knife. make sure no one will be able to find her footprints online. it takes a little bit of staying up late trying to learn code, but eventually, she makes something work.
GILCHRIST.
it’s her project that earns her a scholarship at the esteemed institution, as well as an invitation to the Gravediggers for her potential to contribute as a fully-fledged member. she navigated most of the initiation trials with a flourish, and though she was reluctant at first, seraphina has come to find her own sort of family during her stay at gilchrist, even becoming president for a time
she’s a steady shoulder to lean on, if that’s what you needed. a voice of reason, when she can spare the few words. seraphina becomes fiercely protective of what the society had meant to her during her years as a student and will go at any length to protect its interests. but above all she upholds the bonds its members make for themselves, their loyalty to each other. though not many were able to witness her leadership, it makes itself known in the society’s history like time wears itself on an artifact: respected by those who came before it.
once she has graduated, she tries to maintain her connection with some members, though respects a choice to be left alone.
PRESENTLY.
she becomes a consultant for a lot of companies as a day job, and in her free time, she refines her personal projects. over time, she notices a pattern emerging like an impression, and seraphina uncovers it to discover a web solely controlled by an unknown entity, with many agents acting according to its will
seraphina tracks the signal to reykjavík, in a penthouse that ought to have more security for what it’s worth. a man sits in front of numerous screens, and he almost looks relieved at the sight of her. “good,” he says, “it took you long enough.” and seraphina comes to know this man as her mentor, noah.
( tw: death ) he passes due to complications with his health a couple of years later and he leaves his information network, operations, and agents into seraphina’s care. no one is aware of the change in leadership. noah has only begun preparing seraphina to oversee such an expansive responsibility, and coming into it suddenly is a tall order, but seraphina wants it. the finer details about morality in her type of trade is something she will have to determine for herself. it is far too easy to do the wrong thing. WHY ARE THEY RETURNING TO GILCHRIST MANOR? ⇢ David is returning to Gilchrist Manor with the hope of finally get over his twin brother’s death. Though it’s been years since Donovan passed away unexpectedly, David has not processed it fully. He is hoping that by being at Gilchrist Manor, the place where he lived his best moments as a person and with his brother, that he can create new memories on his own and leave with the peace of mind that his life can still be something exciting and memorable regardless of his whimsical brother’s absence.
HOW DO THEY FEEL ABOUT IT? ⇢ Reluctant is the word that comes to mind. David was doubtful about joining the Gravediggers the first time around, only inevitably joining on account of his twin brother’s insistence. Though it’s been years, he’s still just as hesitant to step through the doors of the manor but for a different reason entirely. Without Donovan’s presence to ease and inspire him, David is unsure how he’ll exist within the society. His twin brother always took the lead, helped him with everything from making friends to gaining romantic prospects and creating moments in his life that made him feel free. Without his instigator, his partner in crime, David is unsure if his experience at Gilchrist Manor will be anything like it was during his college years – a time of growth, change, and liberation.
ABOUT DAVID
David has always been a very meek person. He was never the type to take risks or be confrontational. The Gravediggers Society is arguably the most daring thing he’s ever done and it wasn’t even his idea but his twin brother’s.
You never saw one without the other. If Donovan was around, you know David would be trailing right behind him. He was much like a shadow, looped into doing things Donovan wanted and rarely ever saying a word about it even if he disagreed.
David is his brother’s polar opposite. Quiet, bashful, and very polite. Though during his time at the Manor, he opened up considerably. More confident, more social, but still at his core the more humble of the twins.
David’s brother unexpectedly passed away 4 years ago and David hasn’t been the same since. He not only reverted back to his old self but became an actual recluse with a very small and routine life. It’s obvious to anyone he’s unhappy but he didn’t feel right doing anything about it until now.
CONNECTION IDEAS
Old Flame ; It probably took forever and it was a miracle that it happened at all, but you and David dated at one point in time. It didn’t last long for one reason or the other, but things ended amicably.
Former Crush ; Someone David had a crush on during his time at the Manor. He’s not the most forthright person so you probably had no idea he liked you at all. But he was always so kind to you and got suspiciously quiet (more than his usual) whenever you were around.
Brother’s Ex-Girlfriend ; This would have been his brother’s girlfriend for a majority of his time at the Manor. Someone Donovan split ways with when he graduated because he wanted to travel the world and not be tied down.
My Friend ; It was rare that David had friends that he didn’t share with or meet through Donovan. But this friend, he miraculously made on his own. Someone he didn’t share with Donovan and was much more his speed, something of a best friend when his brother wasn’t monopolizing all of his time.
Enemy by Association ; David’s brother was a very divisive person. You either really loved the guy or really hated him. This person in particular really hated him and hates David just because he’s related to Donovan. Maybe it was a prank gone wrong or someone crossed a line and a fight broke out. ( tw parental neglect ) calantha was born in edinburgh , scotland , to a british family with scottish ancestry. her parents were authors who started their own publishing company not long after the move and achieved great success with this. cal grew up comfortably in a religious family driven by success , though she was raised by nannies due to her parents’ busy schedule. their neglect led calantha to find comfort in television and movies.
from a young age , calantha was labeled prodigious by her teachers and other authority figures ; even at top-rated schools , cal outpaced her peers. as she isolated herself from others , a superiority complex developed within her. her above average intelligence led to apathy as logical reasoning overrode her emotions. calantha was highly competitive , driven to excel academically in order to feel as though she had an advantage over others. the mary eskrine school recruited her for enrollment after cal’s iq test put her at a score of 160. cal enjoyed writing novels and converting them into screenplays , as well as doing a massive amount of research on cinematography. as she progressed in age , religion slowly drifted out and rebellion took its place.
( tw kleptomania ) calantha’s kleptomania manifested in her young adulthood , her impulses driving her to steal from varying sources. the thrill of successfully stealing something and outsmarting society elated cal ( a feeling she had not yet experienced ) and the misery brought upon her when she would ignore these impulses tormented her.
( tw substance abuse ) in reaction to a lack of stimulation and curiosity, calantha began to experiment with drugs. cal dove pretty deep into this, as drugs exercised her creativity; some of her favored works were created in a state of delirium. many in edinburgh came to know cal as someone who could take any amount of any drug and continue to function, which, of course, made her ego inflate. by the end of secondary school, calantha had already finished one screenplay.
( tw kleptomania ) after leaving school, cal got into legal trouble for shoplifting; she was punished with juvenile diversion, much to her dismay despite the alternate punishments she could’ve received. regular drug tests and therapy were implemented, and a therapist attempted to treat calantha’s kleptomania. her illness was something that she took responsibility for but did not want to receive treatment for. however, the experience as a whole was somewhat humbling for calantha, who realized that she was not invincible; calantha pushed herself further into isolation following this realization, especially after her community branded her a pariah.
long story short, cal ended up at gilchrist university and was given an exceptional offer: to join the gravediggers society. the initiation was of no difficulty to her, as her only fears seemed to be failure and dissatisfaction. the gravediggers ended up being a godsend for calantha and her career. the production of her first film was announced after her 18th birthday ( written and directed by calantha ). the group ended up being the most thrilling thing to grace the moments of her life; it offered excitement and stimulation in an environment with intelligent, like-minded individuals, things that she craved. cal often hosted small parties for the group, centered around drug use rather than networking ( though networking was still done ). cal felt as though she had comrades for the first time.
eventually, cal met a man who piqued her interest, and they soon entered a passionate relationship. their relationship had awoken something in cal, and she became aware of the fact that she really could love. at the age of 21, calantha graduated with a double major in cinematography / screenwriting and her first movie had been released with rave reviews. with some assistance from gravedigger affiliates, calantha got her foot in the door of the film world ( much to many’s dismay, as calantha was regarded as somewhat of a controversial figure due to material featured in her first film ). cal and her lover also got engaged.
nearly a year later, however, he left her. her issues had become insurmountable for him: there was the substance abuse, habitual stealing, apathy, communication issues, and pigheadedness. cal had been spiraling even further after receiving some acclaim for her first film, and it was easily noticed. she chose to no longer put effort into their relationship and fixing her own issues. her 22nd life procured the release of her next movie; however, some of her darkest moments took place in this year, as well.
( tw sexual assault in the form of a policeman’s abuse of power ) calantha ended up pickpocketing an off-duty policeman who offered to forget about it in exchange for sex, something a drunken cal eagerly agreed to in fear of public controversy and the end of her career. the incident was a wakeup call for cal, and she began behavior management therapy for her kleptomania; she was also given help processing what happened. the incident led to a fairly intense fear of police; even the sight of a cop car can send her into a full-blown panic attack. therapy also led to her recognization of her toxic behaviors, and Cal turned to God once again.
the last few years of calantha’s life were relatively uneventful. the incident had brought upon some of the best writing of her career as she dove deep into her work. she pushed out two movies with another set to release in 2021. calantha was achieving the impossible in terms of building up her oeuvre at such a speedy pace; outlets began releasing articles promising her success in the industry and by the middle of 2020, she was as famous as david fincher with a net worth of $78 million. despite the fame, calantha found herself lonely and void of anything fulfilling aside from her success. when an invitation came to return to gilchrist, calantha could not deny it. both the money and the entertainment intrigued her, and there was a small hope that her ex would accept the invitation, as well.

TLDR: A meek and mild girl, Rhiannon joined the Gravediggers to try and force herself to have a foundation and make new friends. As a writer, she used the initiation and stories of the society to help inspire her works (both school papers and her debut novel). While some think this means she’s got loose lips, she thinks it’s just using inspiration from the shared experiences. Before Gilchrist:
Always a 'clever' girl, Rhiannon found herself living with an overactive imagination and falling into worlds of her own creation quite frequently. She likened herself to Alice, living in her own wonderland, drawing and writing up fantastical lore day in and day out. What started as a cute habit became the start of her introversion. Why put in the work to build friendships if you could literally build your own? Her parents worried about her, pushing her to enroll in clubs and sports to try and be "like the other kids". She'd managed to forge a few friendships, but she always felt like she was on the periphery - even in her own life. People would describe her as observant and curious, but she knew that was just code for awkward. Instead of starting or maintaining conversations, she was the kind of person to just sit and stare.
At Gilchrist:
The chance to leave her hometown of Vancouver was something that Rhiannon always dreamed of. In her own worlds, the beautiful colors and splendor of nature were something she wanted instead of the seemingly endless expanse of ocean and mountain surrounding her. College in another locale was a safe, easy way to do it. There was built in forced interaction with people so she wouldn't be fully alone, but there was also the opportunity to be in a place where no one knew her name. There were no expectations.
Making friends took too far of a backseat for her, and by her second semester, Rhi realized that she was much lonelier than she ever had been before. Sororities were too intimidating, so she decided to join the Gravediggers. It was a foundation that could make it easy for her to connect people for the rest of her life.
Of course, initiation and the cultish antics of the society haunted her. Leaving her scarred and traumatized - but too frozen to leave (much like a deer in the headlights), so she did all she knew how to do. She wrote. Wrote in her personal journal, her short stories, and even in her fiction classes. She thought that didn't break any rules, after all, everything was 'fictionalized' and almost too outlandish to believe. Others accused her of leaking secrets, of putting the sanctity of the group at risk. In fact - some even accused her of leading to the downfall.
After Gilchrist
The cheerful young girl that entered Gilchrist graduated as a hardened soul that was jaded by the realities of life and death. So she went somewhere else to start the foundations of her life. Ediburgh wasn't too far if she ever wanted to visit, but it was a city where she could hide. After years of failed manuscripts, she grew weary of working hours upon hours at cafes and bars to barely make ends meet. What better inspiration than dipping back into her past? The world agreed. Her debut novel 'Cemetaries' about a mysterious cult was a smashing success... The truth was stranger than fiction, but the rest of the world thought it was only fiction. Little did they know about where the inspiration came from.
She's returned to try and set the record straight about being a squeaky wheel. All she did was use reality to build inspiration for her works, no one got hurt, and it wasn't her fault the society got shut down... but maybe a return could provide some inspiration for novel number two.

no one would deny that they were raised in the lap of luxury. money, food, trips - there was never an issue with them getting as they pleased. soleil chénière is the only child of two art curators, raised never knowing what it was like to want something.
that didn’t make them spoiled (or, well, not in their own mind); they maintained a soft heart and an open mind throughout their youth. they were always known to be a shoulder to cry on, a source of comfort for their friends, someone who will listen (even if you were to call at three in the morning).
a love for the arts flourished in them from their youth. painting, drawing, and everything in between, soleil gravitated towards art as others were drawn to sports, languages, music. they developed their skills in painting, specializing in landscapes, almost always being found with some form of paint on their clothes or under their nails.
when it came time for higher education, their father pushed them towards gilchrist - after all, he graduated from the same university almost twenty years prior, why shouldn’t his child get the same level of education that he did? and soleil’s english wasn’t all that bad, despite how nervous they were about having to use it in day-to-day life at first.
they didn’t find the gravediggers; the gravediggers found them. it was amongst the organization that they thrived. their closest friends were gravediggers, their mentors, their found family -- all gravediggers. they maintained that reputation of being a shoulder to cry on. they were almost always in or around gilchrist manor, that same paint from their youth under their nails, a smile almost permanent on their expression.
because of their deep love for the gravediggers, graduating felt almost like a piece of them was torn away. they moved to paris, taking up residence in their family’s studio apartment there, working as a curator on their own; they had never felt quite so lonely.
the invitation back brightened their spirits immensely. they got to go back to a place they called their second home. being back amongst their friends was something they needed, but it has been clouded by the recent announcement of the death of dr. gilchrist. they try to keep a positive outlook; after all, everyone needs a support system, but their warm welcome back doesn’t feel so warm anymore.

a mentor: someone who helped soleil ease into gilchrist and the gravediggers organization; maybe this was the person who recruited them into the organization?
found family: a group similar in age to them - they don’t all have to like each other all the time (after all, what is a family without drama?), but these are the people soleil would be found with a majority of the time during their time in college.
best friend: they were attached at the hip. maybe they still are ! maybe they’ve kept in contact since graduation, maybe not ! but during their college years, soleil and this person were practically inseparable. they shared their deepest secrets over plenty of wine; soleil couldn’t imagine their life without them.
devotion & delusion: unrequited love ; soleil had a crush on this character (or this character had a crush on them!) but never acted on it. seeing them again is like the shock of cold water to the face. does the other know about the past feelings? soleil hopes not. could those feelings rekindle? perhaps !
rivals: how could you hate this ball of sunshine? well, i’m sure some did. for whatever reason, soleil and this character do not get along, and they are not excited to see them again. they’ll deal with it, though - maybe the other will just leave them be.
