The EU introduces digital wallets with “The EU Digital Identity Wallet”!!!
“A digital ID and personal digital wallet for EU citizens, residents and businesses”
From the website, “EU Digital Identity Wallets will provide a safe, reliable, and private means of digital identification for everyone in Europe.
Every Member State will provide at least one wallet to all its citizens, residents, and businesses allowing them to prove who they are, and safely store, share and sign important digital documents.”
On the website, it promises that the wallet will be “secure and easy way for European citizens, residents and businesses to prove who they are when accessing digital services.”
The wallet is also able to “request, store and share important digital documents about yourself and electronically sign or seal documents.”
And also obtaining a “new bank account, enroll in a university abroad, or applying for your next dream job” is part of the wallet
A promise about the wallet that is made is that “your privacy will always be respected; you control what data is shared and who gets to use it.” (Oh yeah that’s totally not a lie)
“The European Digital Identity Framework entered into force in May 2024. Each Member State will offer at least one version of the EU Digital Identity Wallet, built to the same common specifications, by 2026.”
## the benefits that are being claimed by the website
The website says that you can use a digital wallet to store and share your educational information to new jobs
Made authorization of payments easier
And store important travel information like boarding
There is downloading a digital version of your drivers license, your health insurance
There is more, but you get the idea.
They have certain claims of the benefits of the wallet (look at attached images), even though multiple things like privacy is not promised, because your personal data could get leaked or stolen by that
Four large scale pilots are testing the wallet
“Four Large Scale Pilot projects (consortia bringing together public and private sector expertise from across the EU, funded by European Commission grants) are building prototypes and testing everyday use cases of EU Digital Identity Wallets.”
## requirements for each EU country
“Each Member State will have to provide at least one wallet to its citizens, businesses, and residents”
This wallet keeps making the promise of your data being safe and secure, which many are finding suspicious
their twitter account have posted a few images, with those images saying that the wallets will be voluntary.
Each country will have an App that will be interoperable across the EU.
Tracking and profiting will not be allowed.
(Both voluntary and promises of non tracking and profiting are very weak things, because it could become mandatory in the future and or it could have hidden trackers in it).
