Urgency tugged at every step Lila took, under laced by fear and increasing worry. The straps of her backpack dug into her shoulders, the bag hanging as heavy as her emotions. Streets and shortcuts unfurled around her, the city familiar beneath her feet. She was glad for the familiarity; it made the walk easier to bear with her mind running a hundred miles per hour and seemed to lessen the darkness of midnight.
