Placing my bet now: End of series, Evan Kelmp’s shadow problem gets solved and his wand changes from the dark haunted thing it’s bound to become back to the plain wooden one he got at the start. And he couldnt be happier.
“Oh, shit, d’you need—” you hiccup, “—need some? I think that—well, ’m pretty sure Oisin’s still got some extra. Y’should’ve seen how much his gramma sent him. When I came by ‘n saw it I was like, woah! Like, tha’s so much! But ’s only a little part’f her hoard, which’s like, sssooooo crazy.”
Adaine smiles at you, then it fades slowly when she looks over at Ivy. “Um, how much has she had to drink?”
Ivy shrugs. “I wasn’t exactly keeping count. I mean, her tolerance has never really been the best, so there’s no point. Like, she gets drunk off a cocktail. Strict parents don’t really let you build on that, y’know?” She looks back to you, and Adaine sees something settle in her expression, though she can’t quite place it. “Either way,” she continues, “you don’t need to worry about her.” Ivy nods over in your direction. “He'd rip someone's throat out before letting anything bad happen to her.”
When Adaine glances back at you, you’re giggling into your cup and half-leaning into Oisin’s side, who’s speaking quietly into your ear, an arm hovering carefully around you as you wobble. Her eyebrows shoot up.
“Oh, wow. I didn’t know that they were…”
“What, together?” Ivy rolls her eyes, giving her a look. “Unfortunately for all of us, they’re not. Apparently they’re—” and she lifts up her hands to gesture quotations, “—‘just close friends.’”
“…And, um… they—you're telling me that they actually believe that?”
Ivy shrugs. “Guess so. I mean, they’ve been doing this whole thing since freshman year—kind of a childhood friendship thing, you know?”
Huh. Adaine blinks. “I didn’t realize they had so much… history. I’ve never really seen them together ‘til tonight.”
“And I have more—more important things to do instead of just laying ‘round here because you’re—what, having one bad day!” he hisses. “Well, guess what? I’ve been having a bad day too! In fact, I’ve had so many fucking bad days I’m losing count! Kipperlilly has us doing—God, I’m doing so much shit, all this research and my schoolwork and—and all her fucking nagging, and now you’re in here acting like you’re the only thing I’ve got going on? I don’t revolve around you—the world doesn’t fucking revolve around you!”
Oh. You swallow. Okay.
Yeah—fire. Your face is—it feels like it’s on fire. It’s not because your dragonkin boyfriend has just spat sparks in your face, either—it’s the terrible, familiar feeling of humiliation, horrible humiliation, and so many other things like hurt and anger and the near numbing shock of hearing your boyfriend saying all of that to you.
You’re stunned into silence, hurt clear as day in your trembling chin and the way your shoulders have curled in, and you’re waiting for him to take it back. You’re waiting and watching and searching for that sign in him, that realization of what he’s saying to you—but no.
Oisin just huffs smoke in your face and turns the other way.
“Come fucking find me when you’ve got something actually important to talk about,” he tells you, beginning to walk away, only to pause in his tracks immediately. “No—you know what? I can’t even—I’m too busy. I can’t.”
Then he’s out the door, and misses the way your voice cracks into a dry sob on his name.
