The only sounds in the darkened room were that of pages being turned deftly every thirty seconds or so, and the flames flickering in the fireplace that served as their only source of light.
Dio somehow always looked most regal when he was sat like that, pouring over tomes that looked hundreds of years old, the languages varying as did the topics. Devouring books in the same way he indulged in sins of the flesh, his sharp eyes remained trained on the typed words for hours at a time. Having never felt or minded the chill of the winter, he was never clad in more than a pair of golden yellow trousers, legs crossed in the armchair facing the fireplace.
Choosing to interrupt the silence, they asked a question after some contemplation, “Have you ever been tempted or compelled by something?”
That earned them an arch of the blonde’s eyebrow, closing the dusty volume and setting it aside, leaning forward in his seat.
“What’s brought this on?”
They shrugged, “Nothing in particular,” as they sat up, it was clear from their open expression that they were being honest, “Just simple curiosity.”
“Would a God want to switch places with His worshippers?” he spoke languidly, an almost-amused expression on his face.
They felt a little confused, furrowing their eyebrows, “What’s the correlation between the two questions?”
“Both are, in essence, asking the same thing,” he paused, voice lowering as his following command somehow sounded more saccharine than his previous words had, “Come and sit down here.”
With no protests, they did as told, limbs feeling like cotton as his voice washed over them. Magnetic as always, they thought to themself, irresistible even. Now perched on his lap and detecting no deterrence from Dio, they listened intently to what he had to say.
“Part of what makes humans so utterly mortal and weak is the fact that they tend to convince themselves of falsities all the time. Have you ever heard of the saying ‘the forbidden fruit tastes sweeter’?”
“Of course. It’s the temptation that pulled Adam and Eve down to Earth,” they nodded, mindlessly—and daringly—letting their deft fingers trace invisible lines on the taut muscles of Dio’s abdomen, “Or at least, that’s what some religions tell. Though even non-believers find that story to be entertaining and having some semblance of truth to it.”
“The root of temptation comes from the mind of man telling him that he’s missing out on something, that there’s more to life than what he posseses,” he chuckled, a deep sound that vibrated against their fingertips, his amusement evident, “Such greedy little creatures, driven by the need to consume what they have never owned. Man knows just how little power he wields, and knows the limitations of his own strength. Shielded within the confinements of his own box, he is hyperaware of his own weakness.”
A quiet moment of silence ensued, “That’s slightly contradictory. Wasn’t your first comment that man is weak and so he believes in lies? So how is that weakness caused by his awareness of his own weakness?”
“Patience, my pet,” he cooed, a dangerous look flashing behind his eyes for half a second, and it felt like they’d almost imagined it as his long nails lightly scraped the skin of their neck, his fingers stroking carefully, “Be good and listen. I was getting to that.”
“Yes,” rendered weak by his hypnotic gaze, they almost whispered the word, obediently waiting for him to go on.
“Humans are all greed and gluttony that rival a devil’s, caused by their weak wills and desires that go against their limited abilities. Envious of any higher beings that might exist, they convince themselves that they’ve been cursed with this weakness in order to preserve the best for the best; that Gods are selfish for keeping things to themselves—which of course, they are.”
A knowing look was sent their way, cocky and annoying and somehow flustering them so much that heat danced on their skin. They knew what that look meant; that he himself would snap the necks of anyone who dared take his prized possesion away from him, his darling pet.
He went on, deftly stroking their neck once again, seemingly satisfied with the embarrassed reaction he received, “Puny as he is, man dares to defy the order of the universe, having the preconception that whatever he was told not to do or have is something so magnificent; so brilliant that he must not let slip past his fingers without trying. He believes in its superiority, whatever it is, if it was tailored for the Gods.”
“And that’s why he tries it,” they mused, understanding dawning on their face, “Like a challenge of some sort. Trying to become an equal to a deity. Humans believe that things must metaphorically taste sweeter if they are forbidden.”
“Precisely,” Dio hummed, the fingers that were previously dancing across their throat now trailing to linger on their waist, grip firm and possessive as he spoke, “They indulge in what they shouldn’t, simply to shatter the order of the universe in a measly attempt at proving themselves.”
Another chuckle escapes him, the sound mocking as it rang throughout the dark room, the flames now reduced to mere sparks threatening to die out, the place mostly illuminated by the moon peeking through the silk curtains, “Really, how foolish and hot-headed they are. If only they knew that everything tastes the same, all fruit just as bland as the next. But perhaps that is owed to the fact that Gods have access to all, and so everything becomes boring—tedious, even. Who would ever want to find himself compelled by any human desire, when all it is based upon are false expectations?”
A chill trickled down their spine, like being doused in icy water, as they finally understood what he had been getting at from the start, “So you’re saying that you’ve never felt any true desire, because that’s an act typical of lowly humans?”
Humming as his lips curled up in what resembled a smile, it was clear that he’d enjoyed this conversation and the conclusion they’d reached, “Yes. It’s quite amusing to see them squander their lives seeking something they’ll never truly have.”
From their place on his lap, they could see the outline of his features bathed in the moonlight. The silver ripples of light only accentuated how ethereal he was, though his being was far from angelic. It was more like he was the devil himself, or something of that sort. Their thoughts had them swallowing thickly, the question falling from their lips before they could hold their tongue.
“Do you believe in God, Dio?”
With a small crackle, the fireplace died out, leaving the room almost pitch black, save for the minimal lighting shed by the moon itself. In spite of the darkness, when Dio grinned, his fangs glinted clearly, a cruel look etched into his eyes. They shivered in his arms; from the cold or from his dangerous, ever-so-sure expression, they had no idea. Despite his merciless aura, his next words sounded pitying; almost sympathetic.
“My dear, do you truly believe that I would put my faith in anyone other than myself as the highest being of all?”
