Andrias Rhondarson Analysis
Andrias is not on the Empire's side, all he values in power, it doesn't matter for him which side is which. Andrias is apolitical, he has no political side he's working for, no agenda he believes in, he doesn't care about patriotism or political ideology, all he values is power. At the end of the game he kills Fredret not because he believes in the Trovelt-Schoevian Empire but because he deems Fredret unworthy of rulership. This is why he also kills Zevatian Schugel who is a definite asset to the Empire, not only for vengeance but to prove to himself his own power. This is also why he becomes an imperial general, it puts him at a greater place to utilize power.
A man who is likely the Emperor tells Andrias "The only way to achieve your goals is through force. The world will only be saved when the righteous have power", and this becomes Andrias' guiding principle. All Andrias' actions make sense if one were to look at his actions with this principle in mind. Andrias says himself that up until the end of the game his primary objective has been to kill Zevatian, and his second objective has been to "To give power to those who would do right with it".
Andrias was truly loyal to Levantia Shaytham. Andrias saw him as worthy of power and tried to back him, in his own words it is only after Levantia's death that he switches back his original directive from the Empire. Andrias appears to "switch sides" several times because he doesn't care about political boundaries or which "side" he's on, he only cares that the strong rule the weak and that those in power are worthy of it.
Far before Andrias monologues his motivations, there is plenty of evidence for what his world view is. Everything is about power for him, he has zero sympathy, if someone is unfortunate it's their own fault. For example when he finds Catherine feeding orphans he disapproves, he believes people should not get charity, orphans do not deserve to be fed they should earn it themselves. You can also see his worldview in his arguments with Fredret over magic. Andrias is excessively ruthless and pragmatic things like tradition don't matter to him, he sees power not being used as a waste, and thus disapproves of Fredret refusing to use firearms or modern magic which are much more powerful that Alletain's other military options like traditional (renewable) magic.
Andrias is incredibly repressed. Instead of recognizing that the Trovelt-Schoevian Empire and imperialist expansion as a concept are the root causes of his suffering and that of the entire region, he has internalized his own sufferring and injustice. To Andrias the problem is always with the victim, that they were too weak. The Alliance nations deserve to be invaded because they were weak. He as a lieral child had his family killed because he was too weak. The Empire is right because it has might. He's internalized the training and propaganda that the Empire taught him. Everything bad that has happened was because they were too weak, there is such a contrast between this childish simple mentality and the stoic brutal man Andrias is. Towards the end of the game you can see him having doubts about his path forward, he in genuinely bothered by it and yet goes through with it anyways, Andrias does not have a healthy relationship with his emotions.
