I'm don't do gossipy drama so idk if this is what you were looking for but it's what you're getting. it's mostly about dion phaneuf lol.

dion phaneuf was set up to fail in this city because of the high expectations set by the media and fans after his time in calgary. he was a rookie with sid and ovi and did really well and I think that made people think he was a closer calibre of player to them than he was. like objectively everyone knew, but he was in the same discussions as those guys for a while. leafs fans expected a lot and didn't get it so they soured towards him and if I didn't know better than to be shocked by how hockey players are treated in this city it would still baffle me. I loved watching him play. I was 11 when he was traded here so I just liked fights and hits, but still. I didn't realize until years later how much people hated him. I think I still have a notebook with his face on it somewhere. anyways none of this is really a hot take, but my hot take theory is that any defenceman who wears #3 from now on is kind of destined for the same fate not because of phaneuf but because of the way we as a fanbase behaved. like a self-curse. karma in a way. you know the vibe.

we're going to ignore marchenko (lol) who was only here for a hot sec and travis dermott because the way he went from #3 to #23 still confuses me like 6 years later (my theory is that the universe knew justin holl would fulfill the #3 prophecy. they needed it free for him. or it was lou. who's to say.) if you think about justin holl and john klingberg though, they came pretty much exactly as advertised? and people hate them for it? ik holl had terrible moments and I'm not rewriting history but like, sheldon keefe should not have been putting justin holl in some of those situations. john klingberg was never going to save this defence. same way dion phaneuf was not coming to save the leafs in 2010. I think he honestly could have been great (if his health allowed) on a better leafs team (morgan rielly anybody? who benefitted the most from the phaneuf trade??) but yeah I just think that the way fans felt about phaneuf physically embedded itself into #3 and now any defenceman who takes that number is cursed. also I still love dion phaneuf. that's my hot take.
