Catfish Stink Bait - Is It Effective For Catfishing?
Catfish stink bait is a popular bait for catfishing and many anglers prefer these types of baits for catching catfish above and beyond any other. These are referred to as "catfish stink baits" because they have a very strong odor to the angler who is using them but to the catfish, they smell great.
While you can (or might) catch an occasional blue or flathead catfish with these types of concoctions they are generally considered most effective for channel catfish. The channel catfish is like a big swimming nose as it's body is covered with literally thousands of small sensory receptors that are similar to taste buds on the human tongue. Many biologists have compared catfish to being much like a swimming tongue in the water as their entire body is covered with these taste bud like receptors. Even the smallest catfish swimming in the water has as many as 250,000 taste buds on their body.
Just because the stink bait smells horrible to the angler, that doesn't mean that it smells to the catfish because the fact that they are so odiferous is what makes these types of concoctions so effective and draws the catfish in.
Many anglers choose to use these types of concoction in conjunction with chum like soured wheat, milo or corn adding addition scents to the water to help draw the fish in and get them biting. Many consider the combination of the stinky chum and the catfish stink bait to be the most effective combination for catching channel catfish.
