Some random British snacks that shaped my childhood
I'm British. I wanna talk about British food.
1. Monster Munch
The pickled onion ones were always my favourite. They have a very strong flavour, and they're very vinegary. I can't describe it perfectly, you just have to try them. They're similar to Cheetos in texture, except they're a bit harder. They're in the shape of hands with little holes in, and a popular way to eat them is to slip them onto your fingers like rings. (I feel like these would be pretty good for a poppy playtime themed party...) they also had roast beef flavour and one other that I just don't remember for some reason.
2. Dip Dab
It's this white citrus powder with a strawberry lollipop. You lick the lollipop, swirl it around in the sherbert powder, and repeat. It's really fun, and tastes absolutely wonderful. The sweetness of the lollipop mixed with the sourness of the sherbert is truly a match made in heaven.
3. Fab ice lolly
These thing are AMAZING. It's an ice lolly, similar to a rocket, with chocolate and sprinkles on the top, a white layer in the middle (which was slightly sticky?) and a strawberry layer at the bottom. This was the ultimate summer lolly, whenever someone got the fabs out, you knew it was a good day.
4. White chocolate Magnum
You would feel so grown up switching from fab to Magnum. It's this really creamy vanilla ice cream, covered in white chocolate and put on a stick. You bite off the chocolate and eat the ice cream inside. They also have milk chocolate, dark chocolate and milk chocolate with mint, but the white chocolate was always my favourite. One of my earliest memories is walking through my local nature trail eating one of these.
5. Apple and Blackcurrant squash
This was PEAK. As a kid, I remember getting this in a little coloured plastic cup. And now, I put it in lemonade. Absolutely DELICIOUS. It's a concentrated fruit juice that you put at the bottom of a glass and fill up with water (or lemonade in my case). It also comes in different flavours, like orange, summer fruits, and tropical. Just don't drink it straight from the bottle.
6. Party rings
As the name implies, these were eaten at birthday parties. They're these biscuits (that I can only really compare to digestive biscuits, more on them later) with royal icing on top. They're really good. I don't really know what else to say about them.
7. Marmite
I'm pretty sure you all know what this is. Gooey black substance that you either love or hate. I get SO MAD when Americans try a whole spoonful of it then complain that it's too strong. You're supposed to put it on toast, with butter. I absolutely adore this stuff, it tastes so good. My mum absolutely hates it though (I'm glad my dad likes it).
8. Chocolate digestives
The quintessential British biscuit. You HAVE TO GET THE CHOCOLATE ONES. The regular ones just don't taste as good as the chocolate ones. Dip it in a cup of tea. It's delicious. Don't dip it in juice like I did as a kid. I was just weird.
I hope you enjoyed my wild ramblings about British snacks and drinks.
